Dark Ages Covenants

Recommended Posts

It was some time since I posted on this forum as RL has kept my busy and I needed a little break from the WoD but I hope to be back somewhat again. emotion-1.gif This is pretty long but I hope it's readable.

This is something I wrote up some years ago but haven't come around to write on the computer untill now, but I thought that I should share it and see what people think about it and parts that don't make much sense and should perhaps be changed.

After the fall of the Camarilla the world of the Kindred temporarily spiraled into chaos from which uncounted covenants rose to replace it, most failing due to one reason or another but it put a new system in place. A system which would last for a long time into the modern age, and which in the Dark Ages still producing new additions even while a firm foundation in the “Big Five” has been laid in Christendom.

Major – European (and Byzantine areas)

Invictus: One of the most important and widespread of all the covenants but also perhaps the single most diverse and least organized. In effect the Invictus is less an organization than a way of life and a socially exclusive membership. In most things the Invictus has modeled its practices and forms on the feudal nobility, with some anachronisms which dates back to the Camarilla and the covenant’s origin in that organization.

The Invictus rests on three main pillars:

Chivalry – by which the Invictus defines itself against others and most importantly against those who do not follow its code

Divine Right – which provides the core of the Invictus ideological legitimacy to rule and power as it say that God has declared that the Invictus shall rule the Kindred as per the Great Chain of Being which places Elders above their juniors

Elitism – only the most powerful an accomplished Kindred are welcomed into the covenant and most are denied access with almost only those already having a sire part of the Invictus allowed to actually join the covenant and rise high, most Kindred are regulated to remain as lesser servants to their betters

Nickname: Gentry

Lancea et Sanctum: An organization directly descending from the Camarilla Wing with the same name but have in past centuries adopted a more hierarchical nature even while power has been centralized since the destruction of the Black Abbey. Contrary to the earlier times the Lancea et Sanctum is much less open to advancement and dissident views on Longinus’ words and noble bloodlines can count on favorable treatment as favored by God.

The Lancea et Sanctum stands on three pillars which defines its view and operations

Longinianism – that the Word of Longinus is the one and only truth given to Longinus by God and delivered to the Kindred by Monachus and the Black Saints

Privilege of Interpretation – that the priests and monks of the Black Church are the only ones capable of making a proper interpretation of the Testament of Longinus and associated sacred works

Continuation – that the Lancea et Sanctum is the unbroken continuation of a chain which started with Longinus and proceeded through the Monachus, the Black Saints and finally the Roman Lancea et Sanctum until it came to the Medieval nights

Nickname: Sanctified

Basilica de Golconda: In stark contrast to the Lancea et Sanctum stands the Basilica de Golconda which is the largest organized priesthood to preach Golcondaism through a priesthood modeled after the mortal Catholic Church. The Basilica de Golconda does not have a single point of origin but instead grew from several small groups of Kindred following the same Christianity in undeath as they had done in life. Contrary to the Longinians the Golcondaists stresses connection and interaction with mortals, which is something the Basilica de Golconda is all too happy to carry out, and manipulate mortals both to do what is in line with God’s will and to secure the covenants worldly interests.

The Basilica de Golconda stands on three legs, just like the Invictus and the Lancea et Sanctum

Intermediaries of God – the Basilica de Golconda claims that it alone has the capacity to interpret and know God’s will

Golcondaism – through true devotion and piety a Kindred can find redemption in the eyes of God, known to Kindred as Golconda

Hagiocracy – that rank in the Basilica de Golconda comes from how close or strong in Golconda they are perceived to be and speak thus with the insight on how to reach God’s salvation

Nickname: Redemptionists

Circle of the Crone: Among the dwindling Pagan presence of Europe and the Mediterranean world there is one constant that shows a rare resilience against Christian and Muslim pressure. Through a legion of trappings from direct pagan cults dedicated to one goddess or another to semi-Christian sisterhood idolizing Lilith or folk witches with eldritch knowledge the Acolytes shows and celebrates the power and excess to be found in freedom from the Lord of Heaven’s laws which they hold as little respect for as anything else, save their own alien beliefs. The Circle of the Crone is a covenant without any overarching organization and each follows the instructions left by the mythic Blind Queen to the best of their abilities, from priestesses to fell gods to the witches invoking the patronage of Lilith.

The cornerstones of the covenant are the following.

Tribulation leads to Enlightenment – for through strife against God, kine and Kindred a person can find more of themselves and push forward to new levels and heights

Creation is Power – to create leaves a permanent mark on the world while simple destruction fades with time and through creation the Kindred can overcome their static natures

Kindred are Natural – there is nothing shameful or unnatural in vampirism or the urges and needs that comes with it and they should all be accepted without remorse or regret

Nickname: Acolytes

Adamantes Athanatoi: The direct continuation of the Camarilla the Immortals holds their proud heritage in high regard and despite changes done in the centuries since the fall of Rome the Adamantes Athanatoi has retained most of the original organization many philosophical points from these times together with the adoption of Longinian doctrine. The covenant is still organize its members into four wings based on the organization of the Camarilla. The Adamantes Athanatoi can be found both within the territory of the Byzantine Empire as well as strething to the lands, in one version or another, where Orthodox Christianity has won ground over the Catholic Creed loyal to Rome.

These wings are:

The Wing of August Ones, where those of noble blood are gathered, where decisions are made and positions within the covenant are appointed.

The Wing of the Spear, the official Longinian priesthood of the covenant and serves for spiritual guidance for members, track down heresy and give ideological justification for the covenant’s policies to the masses

The Wing of Swords, the combined army and police of the covenant which protect it and its members from external and internal enemies alike

Wing of Commoners, everyone not holding any positions within any of the other Wings but still a member are placed. Non members are normally tolerated as long as they don’t cause a danger to the stability and the rule of the Immortals

The covenant rests of a foundation of three pillars

Continuation – that both the original Camarilla and Lancea et Sanctum lives on in the Adamantes Athanatoi, unlike the Western pretenders and usurpers of the Invictus and the western “Lancea et Sanctum”

Guardians of Order – as the Camarilla only the covenant of the Adamantes Athanatoi stands between order and chaos for the Kindred, as it has done for over a millennia and without the covenant the Kindred would fall back into chaos and darkness again

Divine Appointment – through the acceptance of the word of Longinus the Camarilla is the only true authority on earth with divine sanction and only God and Longinus are above the Wings in matters of both temporal and spiritual nature

Nickname: Immortals
