PC's under pressure?

When a PC is in a pressure situation how much time do you give the player to decide what is happening?

Personally I favour the 3 + chars wits in seconds to allow them to decide, to reflect a little the speed of thought wits portrays.

i agree with your "technique". i think, it should be like "real time", but slightly "stretched" ( to give them some time to adjust and identify with the situation)... because then players who are concentrating on the game and are aware of what's going on will have the best chances, which gives the whole setting - again - something "real"... as, in real life, if you are observant and alert, you might be able to react faster and more effectively to whatever comes along surprisingly... and that's what i want to mirror in my games. :-)
