  1. The latest from Travis, our humble Geist 2nd Edition developer: Sin-Eaters borrow the term Memento from the Latin phrase memento mori, “remember that you must die”. People have been finding or making tokens by which to remember death for nearly as long as they’ve been dying, but to the Bound they are something more. A Memento is a physical object with a Twilight presence, transformed by the resonance of death into something that’s no longer entirely of the living. Death Trinkets Most Mementos are ordinary objects that were transformed by playing an important role in someone’s death, or by acting as one of a ghost’s Anchors. The Bound have never been able to figure out exactly what turns one object into a Memento while another remains untouched; one grisly murder might result in the murder weapon itself becoming a token of death, while another death, just as violent, leaves the murder weapon unaltered, but creates a Memento out of the porcelain doll sitting on the shelf next to where the victim died. Mementos can also come from more unusual sources. Objects brought back from the Underworld often become Mementos, resonating with the purpose for which they were returned to the world of the living. With effort, the Bound can even create Mementos, infusing an object of their own creation with Plasm and deathly inspiration. Geists can also create Mementos, through their own demise: a geist that’s torn apart or otherwise ended leaves a physical token of their existence in the form of a mask, and certain Ceremonies can create Mementos by trapping a ghost in one of its Anchors. Some Sin-Eaters claim to own even stranger Mementos: the bones of a Kerberoi, bottled souls, undead hearts, and more. Such stories are exactly as fanciful as they are impossible to prove, but if nothing else they turn a common Memento into a great conversation starter. Enduring Treasures Mementos, like Sin-Eaters themselves, are equally solid to physical matter and Twilight ephemera. They’re also damned hard to destroy — they’re never damaged by accidents or environmental hazards, and even deliberate attempts to destroy them require overcoming an extremely high Durability. (Yes, that means a Memento umbrella can be used as a shield, and a Memento leather jacket is roughly the equivalent of a Kevlar vest.) The Bound can feed a Memento to their geist for a full refill of Plasm, but that’s considered a tool of last resort. Aside from their Key, which we’ve already discussed, all Mementos have a supernatural effect of their very own — from a marble that always rolls toward the closest exit to a bootleg record pressed onto an old x-ray film that plays new songs by dead rock stars, Mementos warp the world around them. Sometimes they’re obvious, sometimes subtle; sometimes they’re powerful, sometimes they don’t seem to have a practical use, but people do strange things for a taste of magic, and Memento cults are known to spring up around charismatic individuals or especially remarkable Mementos. Even the Bound are known to be impressed by a well-curated collection of Mementos, artfully arranged by theme or expressing the sheer variety of death. Greater Mementos While most Mementos have a weird, but ultimately minor, supernatural effects, rumors abound of those with truly staggering power: A watch that stops you from aging as long as you wear it. A perfectly-preserved Roman trireme that can sail to any port in the Mediterranean in one night. A date book that tells you exactly when, where, and how you’re fated to die. No one can seem to agree on what makes these Mementos, if they even exist, so powerful. Is it because they’re associated with famous deaths, like Caesar’s assassination or the plane crash that killed Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, and the Big Bopper? Is it because they’re very old, like the 430,000-year- old skull of the first known murder victim? Or is it just sheer dumb luck and random cosmic convergence? Whatever the truth, even the rumor of a greater Memento can set the occult world on edge, and an actual, verifiable greater Memento is the sort of thing krewes and cults go to war over. Example Mementos Just to whet your appetite, here are a couple of example Mementos from the book. (The usual disclaimers about this being non-final, pre-editing text apply.) The Cold Harbor Diary Key: Stillness Description: A small, bloodstained, leather-bound book, filled with notes written by a Union soldier during the American Civil War. Despite being made in the 1860s, it looks almost new. The pages are a uniform cream, the blood on the cover barely dry. The entries begin cheerfully, but become increasingly nihilistic and distraught as the diary goes on. The final entry is uncharacteristically short and to the point: “June 3. Cold Harbor. I was killed.” Effect: The body of anyone who dies holding the Cold Harbor Diary cannot be identified. Fingerprints, DNA, dental records, and more all fail. Even the deceased’s loved ones can’t do better than “It sort of looks like him, maybe, but it’s hard to tell.” This effect does not extend to the deceased’s ghost. The Drowned Phone Key: Deep Waters Description: A banged-up smartphone a few years out of date. Drops of water under the screen and behind the lens of the back camera create weird distortions in the display and in any photos taken with it. Despite that, the phone functions perfectly, though the operating system refuses to update to the latest version. Effect: The phone can make calls and access the internet from anywhere, regardless of reception, provided it is at least partially submerged in water (which doesn’t affect it the way you’d expect). Audio sent this way is raspy and distorted on the other end, but usually still comprehensible. The phone can even make — and, according to one previous owner, receive — calls from the Underworld. Next Time Power that goes unused is little more than bragging rights. Sin-Eaters use their powers in service of their fellow dead and in opposition to the forces that would exploit them. So, next week will we learn about Reapers, or about ghosts? View the full article
  2. Now available in print from DriveThruRPG: Changing Ways for Werewolf: The Apocalypse 20th Anniversary Edition! The Garou Nature The Garou are warriors of Gaia. Part human, part wolf, and part spirit they look like what humans think of as werewolves but are so much more. Though most come into the world as humans or wolves, that state does not last. Wolf-born gain a spark of human intelligence after their Change, while those born to humans must cope with the instincts of a hunter, and the burning need to be part of a pack. Those poor wretches born to two werewolves grow up never knowing any different, and that leaves them with a unique outlook on the world. Beyond their fluid bodies and warrior’s minds, each Garou has the blessings of the spirit world that empowers their fight for Gaia. Red in Tooth and Claw Changing Ways is an in-depth look at what it means to be a werewolf, both on a personal level and as part of a pack. It digs deep into what it feels like to have bones re-knit after breaking, the range of senses available across all forms, and the sudden heady rush of the Gifts and Rites bestowed by spirits. It also provides a look at what life is like for lupus and metis werewolves, characters who have had experiences alien to any person. It shows the many ways that werewolves organize in packs, and how those packs are designed as groups of warriors, rather than aligned to the behavior of wolves. Changing Ways contains: A detailed look at what it means to grow up as a lupus or metis werewolf, and how that colors a character’s perspective. More information on what it feels like to be a werewolf, a creature that changes in both body and mind. Frameworks and organizations for packs, along with new tactics and systems for forging the pack as part of play. 3. Yep, we’re at that strange part of the Trinity Continuum: Aeon Kickstarter, the part where things kind of plod along with a pledge here and there. (So I’ve included this new art above to kind of be the totem of shaking things up and making some action happen!) Amazingly, it took us until three-quarters of the way through to plateau for a bit. We’ve had KSs that plateaued three days after they started! So now’s the time to tell all your friends if you’re a backer, and to take another look at the KS if you haven’t backed yet. Please, if you have time, post in social media so word gets out. In particular, if you know somebody that was a fan of Trinity back in the day, they may not be up on who is publishing what, or that this Kickstarter is even happening to bring back the game. We always have folks coming to us after a KS wanting to know if they could still pledge because they missed hearing about it while it was running. If we can get word out to them now, they can get in on the fun and the extra goodies. Because while we now have BackerKit for post-Kickstarter activities, it’s not exactly really pledging during the KS. Enemy Action illustration by Justin Norman Let me back up a tad. When we first started doing Kickstarters, which I think was six years ago last week, there was just the bare bones of usability. It was the creators of the Kickstarters that added in “Add-ons” and “Stretch Goals” (and a bunch of other things), so when it came to knowing who had added on what, we all came up with improvised systems. Even Reward Tier rewards were, and continue to be, delivered one Reward Tier at a time by messaging that Tier. And then the next, etc. Now, if you look at some of our Kickstarters, I put in anywhere between a dozen and two dozen Reward Tiers, because we were having fun and had a lot of wacky ideas we wanted to share with potential backers. It could take me a day to go through all those Reward Tiers, and then go through all the pledges individually to find out those who had added on the reward, and send out the links for just that one reward. So, obviously, a bunch of folks saw opportunity in my misery, and what they call “Back-End Services for Kickstarter” became a thing. (Of course, I’m certainly not the only KS Creator who was grinding their teeth at the methodology, and a lot of folks had much more complicated reward set-ups). BackerKit was one of these back-end services that I heard good things about, but I was hesitant to pay someone to do something I could do, albeit with a lot of complaining. While the late Stewart Wieck and I were talking about how he was doing his KSs in preparation for our shared Scarred Lands Kickstarter, he extolled the virtues of BackerKit and convinced me that the time and effort saved was well worth it. And he was right. Not only does their set-up simplify any given disbursement of reward links or messages to setting up one file and letting BK get the links out to all who have that reward listed, but they have a “pre-order” page where folks who missed the KS can still “pledge” for items from the KS after it is over. I put those two terms in parentheses because it’s not really a pledge that folks are making in that they don’t get all the stuff from the Reward Tiers, but they do get some, and it’s not a pre-order in the sense we are all used to in this hobby. But the terms are close enough and most importantly, they are a great way for folks to get involved in the KS after it has run, but without waiting for the books in stores, if they are even the type that get there. As the folks who have contacted me about the Deluxe Wraith 20th Anniversary Edition and wanting to back-end pledge have learned, unfortunately. Wraith 20‘s Kickstarter came before I adopted BackerKit, so we don’t have a method for allowing post-KS pledges of any kind. That is totally my bad for not adopting BK earlier. We live and learn. Scion Origin illustration by Shen Fei We do expect those Deluxes to show up available with our friends at Indie Press Revolution (see below in The Blurbs section) eventually, though, as have previous books from KSs before BackerKit. KICKSTARTER: The Trinity Continuum Kickstarter is three-quarters done and we’ve only just hit a real plateau, so now is the time to let folks know it is happening! There are a lot of fans of the original releases out there who aren’t connected to our current incarnation, so please, if you know a fan from back in the day: LET THEM KNOW THIS KS IS HAPPENING! So far, we have pledges headed towards 300% of our funding goal, over 1500 backers, and we’ve gone through thirteen Stretch Goals including VARGs, new Noetic Biotech, new Cyberware and new Espionage-Related Hardtech, and Aberrants and their cults that will be added to the AEon AExpansion, a Trinity Continuum: Aeon novella entitled “Dawn“, a scenario called “Caper, Incorporated” has been added to the In Media Res scenario collection PDF for the Trinity Continuum Core, and backers will be able to download the Trinity Core Dice for the Onyx Dice Rolling App. https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/200664283/trinity-continuum-aeon-rpg Trinity Continuum: Aeon, is our reboot of the classic Trinity (Aeon) game, and Trinity Continuum: Core is the core book that all of our Trinity Continuum game lines will spin off from. Both books will be a part of this Kickstarter and backers have already received the first two quarters of the Trinity Continuum: Core text, with more to come. James Bell, our Kickstarter Manager, has been keeping this KS hopping, so we hope you’ll check it out! Our next Kickstarter is slated to be EX3‘s Dragon-Blooded. As we try and find ways to enable our community to more easily play our games, the Onyx Dice Rolling App is now live! Our dev team has been doing updates since we launched based on the excellent use-case comments by our community, and this thing is both rolling and rocking! Last week the devs are added a whole bunch of new game lines’ dice and rolling bg’s and got caught by a bug Apple needed to fix, so be sure to update your app and soon that should be fixed. Jyhad is in force everywhere from lofty, perfumed Elysium to cloying, smoke-filled blood feasts. Jyhad’s the eternal game played by elders, Methuselahs, and worse — it’s the agenda of beings so utterly beyond humanity, one such as yourself could scarcely understand its movements. Luckily for you, you’ve picked up a copy of my diary. With my help you may just take a step on the first rung of understanding. Information worth having is information you must earn through blood, and oh, how I’ve bled for what’s contained within these pages. — Beckett Beckett’s Jyhad Diary serves as the definitive book of setting and plot for Vampire: The Masquerade, containing 30 chapters spanning different geographical regions, encountering vampires of every clan, profiling obscure and profound segments of the mythology, and providing countless story hooks on every page. Should his plans be made public, the Prince knows the wolves — both real and imagined — would launch an attack, threatening all within his domain. That’s where you come in. Legacy of Lies includes: Basic rules for players and Storytellers Introduction to the Vampire: The Masquerade Dark Ages setting Introductory adventure Characters for players and Storytellers A Land Where Legends Walk Drawing enthusiastically on Greek mythology, the revised and re-imagined Scarred Lands nonetheless retains its place as a modern fantasy RPG setting. This is a world shaped by gods and monsters, and only the greatest of heroes can expect to be counted among them. The most populous continent of Scarn, Ghelspad, plays host to vast unexplored regions, hides unsolved riddles from ancient cultures, and taunts adventures with the promise of undiscovered riches hidden among the ruins of older civilizations. Yet the myths of the Scarred Lands are relatively recent events. The effects of the Titanswar still ripple through the world, and the heroines and villains of many of these stories are part of living memory, if not still living. The Award-Winning Fantasy Setting Returns Scarred Lands has been a favorite fantasy setting since the release of the Creature Collection for the d20 System in 2000. 5. Got the latest Geist update from Travis: The Bound are not merely people possessed by the dead. A Sin-Eater’s geist is a conduit through which she can draw on the power of the Underworld itself. She unleashes tendrils of Plasm that take physical form as bleeding walls, flying knives, and skeletal apparitions. She lays deadly curses, draws her geist into her flesh to transform her body, or infuses her voice with the keening wails of the dead. All Haunts draw their power from the Underworld, the Sin-Eater (or her geist) weaving Plasm into a form that befits the Haunt, whether that’s invisible strings that fling objects around a room or black-iron talons wrapped around her fingers. As she advances her understanding of a Haunt, she discovers novel new ways to weave Plasm into the Haunt’s effects, and as her raw ability to store and channel Plasm increases, she gains the ability to sling powerful Haunts at a moment’s notice. Haunts For Geist Second Edition, we’ve kept the seven Haunts from the first edition core rulebook (back when they were called Manifestations), but we’ve added three new ones to allow each Burden to have a signature power: The Boneyard is the classic “haunted house” power: By suffusing an area with Plasm, the Bound gains a perfect awareness of the area and the ability to create minor poltergeist-like effects. At higher levels, she can project her senses to anywhere within the area, trap people inside the Boneyard, or even warp the environment to fit her whim. The Caul allows the Sin-Eater to suffuse her body with Plasm, becoming a protean horror of malleable flesh. She can twist her visage into a nightmarish form, bud off a horde of weird homunculi, or even consume the recently-dead to take their shape. The Curse expresses the displeasure of the dead, hexing her victim with bad luck. At higher levels she can turn technology against the victim, wither his limbs, or give him a brief glimpse of what it’s like to be a ghost, forgotten and invisible. The Dirge is a haunting, wordless melody that plucks at the heartstrings of the living and the dead alike. It can mesmerize those who hear it, heal or inflict madness, and even call forth the dead into the living world. The Marionette gives the Sin-Eater the ability to reach out with tendrils of Plasm and manipulate objects at a distance. At higher levels she gains greater control, terrible strength, and even the ability to trap her targets in a prison of their own flesh (or Corpus) that dances to her tune. The Memoria is the Haunt of memory, calling up events buried and forgotten. At the basic level, the Bound can experience the memory herself; at higher levels she can manifest it as a phantasmal image, bring others into the memory, and ultimately change the memory, breaking cycles of abuse and granting closure to those traumatized by the past. The Oracle flings the Bound’s shade into the Underworld to seek forbidden knowledge and lost secrets. And all it takes is for her to die. Again. The Rage is, as its name suggests, the fury of the grave unleashed. It is rending claws, a scream that strikes its listeners blind, a wrath that cracks open the world. The Shroud wraps the Sin-Eater in her geist, pulling her briefly into Twilight. At higher levels, she becomes preternaturally ghost-like even while not in Twilight, and learns to slip between the world of the living and the Underworld with equal facility. The Tomb is the Haunt of things lost to time, of grave goods and the symbolic meaning of the grave. It allows her to make whole what was destroyed, spinning wrecked hot rods or dead loved ones from shells of Plasm. At higher levels they can invite ghosts into the replicas they create, imbue their creations with weird powers, and even spin reality out of symbolic representations, creating Staff out of wax ushabti figurines or Resources out of joss paper Hell Money. Mechanics Haunts are rated from one to five dots, but the power progression works a little differently than, say, Vampire’s Disciplines or Mage’s Arcana. The first dot of every Haunt is the only one that has an activation roll, and it creates the basic effect of the Haunt in the form of a Condition (or, sometimes, a Tilt). Higher dot levels allow the character to spend additional Plasm to add effects to the Haunt or improve the efficiency of the Plasm spent on the base power. With a rare few exceptions, most Haunt levels add a single, significant option, so you won’t be faced with the choice paralysis of having a huge menu of potential effects. For example, the first-dot power of the Boneyard allows the Sin-Eater to haunt an area ranging from a few rooms up to a large warehouse, depending on how much Plasm she spends. The second dot lets her spend Plasm to remote-view from anywhere within the Boneyard, while the third dot increases the base area of the Boneyard and also lets her spend Plasm to inflict a penalty on any attempts to escape the Boneyard. Oh, and that initial Condition? It resolves if someone throws your geist’s ban or bane at you. So keep that information secret. The net result of this is a system that makes your Plasm reserves and Plasm per Turn a significant part of power use — a low Synergy Sin-Eater has to allot more time to create her Haunts, or find creative ways to acquire more Plasm. Higher-Synergy characters can throw around lots of Plasm per turn and create some truly terrifying effects at a moment’s notice. Keys The gates of the Underworld are locked. Everyone knows that. They open only to admit the shades of the dead — but over the millenia, common motifs wear grooves in the fabric of death itself. Every bloody-handed murder, every plague, every senseless accident that snatches away a life, leaves an impression on the land of the dead. It’s a process not unlike taking a wax impression of a lock, but in reverse: instead of the tumblers imprinting on the soft wax of the key, the Key shapes the lock to fit itself. While anyone with the proper knowledge can use these Keys to open Avernian Gates (p. XX), the Bound, standing as they do on the borders between the land of the living and the land of the dead, are themselves doors to the Underworld. Unlocking themselves yields a rush of power and Plasm. That power doesn’t come free: each Key bears a Doom that afflicts those who call on its power. If there’s an argument for the active, thinking malevolence of the Underworld, it may well be these. For Geist Second Edition, we’ve trimmed the list of Keys down to nine: one for each Attribute. Your character starts with one innate Key tied to their own death and a second tied to their geist’s. To get more Keys, you’ll need to collect Mementos — or practice ectophagia on some other geist. The Key of Beasts (The Primeval Key, the Key of Tooth and Claw, the Key of Verdant Savagery) – Wits The Key of Blood (The Stigmatic Key, the Key of Veils and Shades, the Key of Crimson Agony) – Presence The Key of Chance (The Bastard’s Key, the Key of Jinx and Hex, the Key of Black Humor) – Dexterity The Key of Cold Wind (The Breathless Key, the Key of Gale and Garrote, the Key of Ivory Sorrow) – Resolve The Key of Deep Waters (The Tear-Stained Key, the Key of Wave and Whirlpool, the Key of Azure Grief) – Manipulation The Key of Disease (The Wasting Key, the Key of Plague and Pestilence, the Key of Bilious Despair) – Stamina The Key of Grave Dirt (The Crushing Key, the Key of Stone and Barrow, the Key of Slate Futility) – Strength The Key of Pyre Flame (The Burning Key, the Key of Ash and Brand, the Key of Golden Annihilation) – Intelligence The Key of Stillness (The Silent Key, the Key of Shroud and Shadow, the Key of Jet Deception) – Composure (The sharp-eyed among you might notice that two of the Keys from first edition are gone, and have been replaced by the no-longer-used Thresholds. The Phantasmal and Passion Keys were cut because there are now entire Haunts dealing with illusions and emotions, while the Industrial Key didn’t really fit thematically.) Mechanics Remember before where we said that Sin-Eaters need to find creative ways to get more Plasm? Keys are the main one of those. You can unlock any Haunt with any Key (or even with none at all), but you get more out of it if you use a Key that’s thematically relevant. So what do Keys do? First, they give you a kicker of free Plasm — a number equal to the Key’s Unlock Attribute. This Plasm ignores the normal per-turn limit, so by using a Key, even a low-Synergy character can throw out a big effect. (If you need Plasm for something that isn’t a Haunt, you can use a Key just for the free Plasm — but you still suffer its Doom.) Second, they let you add the Key’s Attribute rating to the activation roll for a Haunt. Finally, if you use them in a situation that’s resonant with the Key — using the Key of Chance when something you love is on the line, or using the Key of Stillness on an unaware or helpless target — you earn an exceptional success on three successes instead of five. Of course, there’s a cost associated with all this goodness. Isn’t there always? Once you’ve used a Key, you fall under the effects of its Doom. While you’re Doomed, you can’t use that Key from that source again until the Doom is triggered. The Doom of Blood, for instance, makes you fail dramatically the next time you try to avoid a violent confrontation, whether by de-escalating, running, or what have you. (This, incidentally, is why it’s useful to keep a large collection of Mementos handy. While you’re under the Doom of Stillness from your own innate Key, you can still use the Key of Stillness from the Cold Harbor Diary, for example.) Next Time It seems logical to go from the main supernatural powers of the Bound to their supporting abilities. So next time, will we learn about Ceremonies or Mementos? View the full article

  7. Why yes, first Canis Minor is a constellation. Constellations are groups of stars…in SPACE. Can you see where this is going? Trinity Continuum: Aeon has a whole lot of space action and exploration, and we’ve reached the part of the Kickstarter where we will start unlocking the full text to TC: Aeon in stages for all backers to read and wonder at! (We have unlocked all of the text of the Trinity Continuum Core book these last two weeks, now it is TC: Aeon‘s turn). For Impish Ian Watson and John Snead and all their aemazing writers, this is the end of a very long creative process. Just years and years since we knew we could greenlight the Trinity Continuum books. Now finally, backers will be able to read and dig into this labor of love! Dragon Blooded illustration by Gunship Revolution If you are an Aeon Trinity (or Aeon/Trinity) fan from way back and haven’t backed yet, now is the time! In the unlikely event that you don’t like what you see, you can cancel your pledge before the KS is over and no harm, no foul. That has been our intention with this method of sharing the completed text from the start: it worked well with Changeling: The Lost 2nd‘s KS, and seems to be doing the same with this Trinity Continuum KS, too. https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/200664283/trinity-continuum-aeon-rpg And even if you aren’t interested, please let anyone you know who was a fan know that this Kickstarter is running right now. We really want to get as many of the fans from back when aware of this resurgence of not just the Trinity Universe, but of the whole Trinity Continuum! But Canis Minor is also the name of our Pugmire Community Content program that is debuting this Thursday the 15th. It is entirely coincidental that the Year of the Dog starts right after this debuts. Or is it? This is the first of Onyx Path‘s Community Content portals to launch, but it certainly won’t be the last. These sorts of programs tie into everything we have been pushing for these last six or seven years; better and genuine communication and involvement with our community. From our Open Development Process to even these weekly snapshots of what’s going on behind the curtain, we’re committed to finding new ways to connect. And now, with Canis Minor you can present your ideas to the community and maybe even get paid back a bit financially for your hard work. Here’s a link to a post Pugmire creator and developer Eddy Webb made about this program: http://forum.theonyxpath.com/forum/main-category/cavaliers-of-mars-and-pugmire/1165525-canis-minor-faq-pugmire-community-content Pugmire has a rich potential for additional projects – not only have we at Onyx Path barely scratched the surface of the world and all that it holds, but by Pugmire‘s very nature there are a lot of folks who love their Good Dogs so much that they are bubbling with ideas. Here then, is the portal to those ideas becoming a real thing that others can share and appreciate. Obviously, there’s going to be a lot more info coming out this week about Canis Minor including a new post by Eddy updating his earlier one linked above, and we hope you’ll be able to take advantage of the opportunity and make some projects for Good Dogs! After this, we’re working on both Scarred Lands and Scion Community Content, and I’m sure others as we get these first three rolling. Demon: The Descent Enemy Action illustration by Brian LeBlanc Finally, today was our first Monday Meeting with both newcomers Matthew “Call me Matthew” Dawkins, and Dynamic Dixie Cohran. We are all just thrilled to have them in on the call and contributing to the one meeting we are all locked into every week, and it’s already obvious they will be doing great things with Onyx Path. Please join us in welcoming them into the INNER SANCTUM! Watch how we bend reality and alter Fate! (Or, you know, review schedules, convention strategies, and debate the minutia of a press release). No! Pay no attention to the parenthetical! We wield the Power Cosmic! We travel the cosmos and surf past Canis Minor as it barks and snaps on our way to: Many Worlds, One Path! BLURBS! KICKSTARTER: The Trinity Continuum Kickstarter went live January 30 and we’re almost half-way through, we have pledges headed towards 300% of our funding goal, over 1400 backers, and we’ve gone through nine Stretch Goals including VARGs, new Noetic Biotech, and Aberrants and their cults that will be added to the AEon AExpansion, a Trinity Continuum: Aeon novella entitled “Dawn“, and a scenario called “Caper, Incorporated” has been added to the In Media Res scenario collection PDF for the Trinity Continuum Core. https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/200664283/trinity-continuum-aeon-rpg Trinity Continuum: Aeon, is our reboot of the classic Trinity (Aeon) game, and Trinity Continuum: Core is the core book that all of our Trinity Continuum game lines will spin off from. There’s been tweaks to all elements of the UI, you can now preview every die type in the store, and you can use multiple die types per roll! Coming this Wednesday as an Advance PDF on DTRPG, we reveal The Secret of Vinsen’s Tomb, a Jumpstart adventure for Pugmire. (And yes, there will be a physical book PoD version coming soon). www.drivethrurpg.com/product/232337/The-Secrets-of-Vinsens-Tomb–A-Pugmire-Jumpstart A cat living in Pugmire disappears, but neither the police dogs nor the cats of the Cat Quarter know why. When zombies attack the heroes, however, all signs point to an invasion by the Monarchies of Mau. But how does this intrigue tie into the lost tomb of the first king of Pugmire? The Secret of Vinsen’s Tomb is a Pugmire story for three to six characters. This jumpstart contains all the rules and characters you need to play — just grab some dice and go! You can also use this adventure with the full version of Pugmire. The Secret of Vinsen’s Tomb contains: • An evocative and mysterious setting that’s both family friendly and deep enough to create compelling stories. • A summary of Pugmire’s traditional fantasy rules system. It’s designed for streamlined play, with an emphasis on cooperation and action over competition and violence. • A complete adventure for a Guide to run for three to six players. Also useful for Guides running a full Pugmire game of first or second level characters! • Six ready-to-play characters, so you can jump into the action. Can your good dogs discover the secret of Vinsen’s Tomb? Also releasing this Wednesday on DTRPG is the physical book PoD version of the Pugmire Core Rulebook itself! Is a life of running and hiding a life worth living? We say yes. There’s always something between the running and the hiding, and those moments of grace make it all worthwhile. The Huntsmen Chronicle Anthology is a perfect companion piece to Changeling: The Lost, 2nd Edition. These stories spin tales of the Lost, of those abducted and enslaved by fairies. Those who escaped, but whose captors will stop at nothing to find them. These fairies summon forth the Huntsmen, primordial hunters who understand nothing but pursuit and capture. The Huntsmen are unstoppable monsters, and the Lost can only look to each other for respite, rare comfort, and rarer trust. Masterfully written by the likes of Neall Raemonn Price, Joshua Alan Doetsch, Myranda Sarro, Steffie de Vaan, Malcolm Sheppard, Alan Alexander, Renee Knipe, and Matthew Dawkins, Beckett’s Jyhad Diary is as fascinating to read as to use for your game Chronicles. With a howl of RAGE, the W20 Changing Ways Advance PDF charges at you this Wednesday on DTRPG.com! Changing Ways is an in-depth look at what it means to be a werewolf, both on a personal level and as part of a pack. Changing Ways contains: • A detailed look at what it means to grow up as a lupus or metis werewolf, and how that colors a character’s perspective. • More information on what it feels like to be a werewolf, a creature that changes in both body and mind. • Frameworks and organizations for packs, along with new tactics and systems for forging the pack as part of play. BITTER RIVALS. AND A COTERIE CAUGHT BETWEEN THEM. Marcus Verus, the vampiric Prince of Chester, secretly prepares to go into torpor. In subsequent years, over 40 titles were published for Scarred Lands, making it one of the most fully supported fantasy RPG settings ever and the premiere product line of Sword & Sorcery Studios. 8. Here’s a peek at some text from the upcoming Geist: The Sin-Eaters! One Foot in the Grave After a close race, Sin-Eaters themselves pulled out in front of the Underworld by a narrow margin, so let’s talk about the Bound. First and foremost: Sin-Eaters are dead. The fact that they’re still wearing their bodies and walking around with a pulse is immaterial — they died, they made their Bargain with a terrifying specter, and they got back up with a roiling ball of Plasm and fury where their soul should be. As far as the Underworld (and the Reapers) are concerned, they’re dead. As far as (most) ghosts are concerned, they’re dead. As far as other mystical forces are concerned, they’re dead. And yet, the Bound are still wearing their bodies and walking around with a pulse. They’re in a position of privilege denied the average ghost, who can scarcely do more than make herself briefly glimpsed or whisper a few brief words to the living — and that’s a bitter pill for some ghosts to swallow. The reason the Bound occupy such a liminal space in the community of the dead is, of course, because they made the Bargain. At the moment of death, or shortly thereafter, before the nascent Bound’s ghost has fully shucked off her dead flesh, she meets the geist. Some Bound describe this meeting as happening in a place of featureless black between the worlds of the living and the dead, others describe it as happening on the banks of one of the Rivers of the Underworld, and still others describe it as though time stopped at the instant of their death and they heard a disembodied voice speak one terrible word. “Choose.” Though they call it the Bargain, it’s a mistake to think of this process as any kind of negotiation or compromise. It’s a primal choice, a yes or no — geists aren’t exactly talkative at the best of times, and the newly-dead Bound is in no fit state to haggle. Agree, and it’s done. Refuse, and you’re all-the-way dead (with the distinct possibility that the geist eats your ghost then and there). The recently-Bound often don’t fully understand what they’ve agreed to until later — usually the first time their geist encounters a crisis point and goes on an unchecked rampage. Don’t expect your geist to be much help in figuring this new situation out either. Though geists tend to choose people whose death resonates with them in some way, few Bargains start from a place of comradely good fellowship. It’s a mutually coercive, self-interested relationship, at least at first — like two inmates on a chain gang, escaping together because the alternative is to stay imprisoned. Improving that relationship, building that Synergy, takes time and work. It’s hard enough building that kind of relationship between two people who can communicate freely, but a geist’s humanity is buried deep under the poison of the Underworld, like pure water under an oil slick. They’re elemental things, acting and reacting on pure, primal instinct. It’s a rare sort who can look past that, to see the wounded person beneath the horrow show mask, and draw that poison from the wound. (This, incidentally, is the origin of the term “Sin-Eater:” a Bound who tries to heal their own geist. It has since expanded in scope to refer to any Bound who actively stands against the Underworld and those who exploit the dead in general, but that’s where it started.) There’s one other catch to the Bargain, though it’s one many Bound never consciously realize. The Bargain requires death. Not just the literal death of the Bound-to-be as we’ve already discussed, but death in aggregate. The power to form such an insoluble bond between geist and Bound can only come from the metaphysical resonance of death, and lots of it. To put it more plainly: the Bound only exist in times and places of tremendous death and suffering. The Black Death. The Taiping Rebellion. Belgian rule in the Congo, or British in India. This means that the Bound don’t have a continuous, centuries-long history like some of the other game lines do. They appear and disappear throughout history like stormcrows, when plague stalks the land and atrocity runs rampant. It also means that a disproportionate number of Sin-Eaters themselves were victims: of war, or of plague, or of systemic violence. The Bound are not immortal (even a geist can’t hold old age at bay). That means a lot of Bound throughout history haven’t had elder statesmen or mentors to learn from. Cultural archaeology and reinventing the wheel are commonplace, as successive generations try to build a foundation of understanding. The one-two-three punch of World War I, the global influenza pandemic of the 1920s, and World War II (not to mention 20th century improvements in communication and transportation technology) created the first long-lasting, global Bound culture in living memory, a culture that’s still going strong today. While the Bound are still more common in places where disproportionate numbers of people are dying before their time, it now seems the Bargain can happen anywhere, at any time. The most popular (read: least pants-shittingly terrifying) theory is that the overall population has skyrocketed to the point that the sheer number of people across the globe dying every day (about 156,000, or a little less than one Battle of the Bulge per day) is enough to tip the scales. As for the other theories… well, let’s just say there are certain Mourner krewes researching correlations between periods of high Bound activity and Reaper incursions with great interest. Next Time: There are two sides to the Bargain. Shall we talk about the hard work of Synergy, or the reward of Haunts and Keys? View the full article

You are the ones that must be destroyed in the name of the Monarchies!” — One-Eyed Molly A cat living in Pugmire disappears, but neither the police dogs nor the cats of the Cat Quarter know why. 10. Trinity Continuum: Aeon art by Marco Mazzoni Yes, we have zoomed to the stars! The Trinity Continuum: Aeon Kickstarter has funded and six days in we’re actually over 200% funded and we have over 1200 backers! It is so thrilling to read the response from not only our old Trinity fans, thanks to every one of you for keeping the love alive, but amazingly, we’re seeing tons of backers who are new to Trinity jumping into the KS! Which makes me really glad that Jammin’ James Bell, our Kickstarter Manager, has included a large selection of Trinity first edition PDFs so that new folks can get a taste of all the 1e magic. And that PDF set is growing bigger with Stretch Goal rewards that add more Trinity 1e PDFs. Yes, a third of our Stretch Goals are for the PDF lovers and newcomers to Trinity. This does not in any way take away from the remaining two thirds of our SGs that add more stuff to our backers’ rewards. You see, Jammin’ James has arranged the SGs so that the added PDFs are at goal amounts that are designed to pop up as a fun thing folks can get between the SG amounts that we have to carefully set. In other words, if we dropped the added PDF goals, the remaining two thirds of the SGs would not change their funding amounts one bit. It would just seem to take longer to reach them because there wouldn’t be one of the PDF SGs to hit. We do this because we have data that shows that folks tune out of Kickstarters that have long waits between the Stretch Goals. At the end of the day we want folks enjoying this KS and feeling excited that it is going along well, and shorter SGs make that happen better than longer ones. Wraith 20 art by Larry MacDougall Remember, like I’ve said a lot over the years here and on KS updates, most of our Stretch Goal amounts aren’t extra money to be thrown at a new section in the AEon AExpansion. Most of the, say, five thousand dollars we need to achieve that goal is from pledges by people who are pledging for physical books. Which is as it should be since getting those traditionally printed physical books printed and in stores is the stated goal of the KS. But, that means that all those pledge amounts have to subtract out the KS fee and the cost of creating and shipping those physical books. So we are choosing to take the rest, which is a small percentage, and plow that money back into a new cool creation like the new section for the AEon AExpansion. There’s not a lot of “free money” floating around, and, in fact, our data also shows that very few folks will up their pledges just to get to a new Stretch Goal. Once in a while, particularly for like that last Stretch Goal right at the end of a KS campaign that everybody is afraid won’t be funded, then we see backers adding in a bit without needing an Add-on or whatever as a thing they are justifying adding to their pledge for. C20 Freeholds art by Jeff Laubenstein So what I’m saying is, Stretch Goals are for fun and to keep folks engaged with the Kickstarter. They cost us, but we arrange them so that their costs are covered even if that makes for larger goal targets. We do it because we want folks feeling special and enjoying their time spent with our KSs. This is one of those bits of info I even hesitate to share here in the Monday Meeting Notes blog, but even though it is sad, I think it is important that you folks are aware of these sorts of things. Last week, long, long time illustrator for White Wolf and Onyx Path, William O’Connor, passed away suddenly at 47. I started hiring Bill, or WoC as we called him internally, to do illustrations for the Ars Magica line as things were getting big with Vampire 1st Edition. His professionalism and good nature made it easy to hire him again and again, and his willingness to try new subject matter meant that as WW added new game lines, he could be relied on to create unique and gorgeous illustrations to match those games. For VtM, we got into a visual motif of “put the vampire on a high thing” which you can see here with some examples: We also added that whole motif into other game lines: When we needed card art, Bill was there, when I wanted to do a tryptic to open each Book of V20, Bill was there. I even talked him into doing behind the scenes blogs for that tryptic, and while he was terrified as to what the fans would say, he was game and the whole exchange between him and the community was fantastic for WW and V20, and I think a lot was learned on both sides. Most of all, and you can see this in the many testimonials to him online, Bill was a friendly talented guy who loved to share what he knew. He was always learning and then teaching what he learned, as a voice in the TTRPG artistic community, as an art teacher, and as a father to his two little girls. He was an artist who was also someone I called friend, and he will be missed. Last, but in no way the least, I want to let you all know that Rollickin’ Rose Bailey has decided to leave Onyx Path to pursue some pretty great opportunities. I’m sad to lose her as a full-time part of our Onyx Path crew, as she has done so much to help build Onyx these last years all the while keeping an eagle-eye on the quality of our projects, but am happy that she is heading to new amazing adventures. The sheer depth of her effect on our projects is staggering; everything from her original concepts for Demon, how she pushed forward the overall tone and quality of the 2nd Editions for Chronicles of Darkness, and her absolutely integral work supporting our other devs. I don’t think we would have been able to ramp up our EX3 schedule with our new devs without her providing attention and guidance. We will definitely miss our Rose. (Even though we’ll all be working on Cavaliers of Mars with her still, and I have a small inkling that her writing will still appear in various Onyx Path books.) If you want to keep up on her latest projects and throw a little support her way, here is Rose’s Patreon link: https://www.patreon.com/fantasyheartbreaker But, fear not True Believers! Wraith 20 art by John Cobb Dynamic Dixie Cochran has joined us as a full-time freelancer and will be working with our developers for the Chronicles of Darkness and Exalted 3rd game lines, as well as hiring and communicating with our editors. As an editor herself, she has more than a few ideas as to the care of these unsung heroes of publishing. If you’ve visited our booth at just about any of the conventions we’ve gone to this past year, you’ve probably met the powerhouse that is Dixie. In fact, she probably convinced you to buy a book or three, as well. One of the developers Dynamic Dixie will be working with is Meghan Fitzgerald, who is going to bring the Changeling: The Lost 2nd main book to fruition. We had already intended that Meghan would then develop the CtL2 line after helping out on the main book with Rose, so we’re just swapping around the focus on who does what. Both Dixie and Rose herself will be backing up Meghan as she finishes up the big book and rolls into the Stretch Goals. Lots happening here at Onyx Path, and we’re always looking at the best and better ways of creating: Many Worlds, One Path! BLURBS! KICKSTARTER: The Trinity Continuum Kickstarter went live January 30 and with almost a week in, we have pledges at 200% of our funding goal, over 1200 backers, and we’ve gone through six Stretch Goals including VARGs and Aberrants and their cults that will be added to the AEon AExpansion, and a scenario called “Caper, Incorporated” has been added to the In Media Res scenario collection PDF for the Trinity Continuum Core. Trinity Continuum: Aeon, is our reboot of the classic Trinity (Aeon) game, and Trinity Continuum: Core is the core book that all of our Trinity Continuum game lines will spin off from. Today the devs are adding a whole bunch of new game lines’ dice and rolling bg’s, so be sure to update your app! There’s been tweaks to all elements of the UI, you can now preview every die type in the store, and you can use multiple die types per roll! V20 Beckett’s Jyhad Diary goes on sale in PDF and PoD versions on DTRPG.com! http://www.drivethrurpg.com/product/225322/V20-Becketts-Jyhad-Diary It’s ever been a loaded word among vampires. In an ancient epoch of forgotten glories, Creation’s greatest artificers forged unimaginable wonders and miracle-machines. Now, in the Age of Sorrows, kingdoms go to war over potent artifacts, scavenger princes risk everything to uncover relics of the past, and the Exalted forge great arms and armor on the anvil of legend. These treasures are yours to master. Discover the mystical power of the five magical materials and the secrets of creating your own Evocations. Wield weapons of fabled might and don the armor of mythic heroes, making their puissance your own. Claim Creation’s wonders: the miraculous tools of the Chosen, living automatons, flying machines, hearthstones, and more. And unleash the mighty warstriders, titanic god-engines of conquest and devastation, to once more shake Creation with their footfalls. A Land Where Legends Walk Drawing enthusiastically on Greek mythology, the revised and re-imagined Scarred Lands nonetheless retains its place as a modern fantasy RPG setting. In subsequent years, over 40 titles were published for Scarred Lands, making it one of the most fully supported fantasy RPG settings ever and the premiere product line of Sword & Sorcery Studios. Available in both 5th Edition and Pathfinder compatible versions! 11. New Era, New Stories

It feels as if we're entering a new era for Onyx Path. Both universes are getting rebooted with fresh new perspectives. The Chronicles of Darkness have expanded into historical eras to allow for crossover play between those eras - and Dark Eras 2 promises historical eras which feature crossovers between supernatural types. And soon, there will be a new Master Chronicle, the Contagion Chronicle, which brings all of the supernatural types together in what could become the first Tier Four Chronicle. It sounds as if something is going wrong with the God-Machine, sand in the gears, and no supernatural type can escape its failing escapements. And as if that wasn't enough, yesterday saw a major announcement. Mark Rein*Hagen is back, steering Vampire: the Masquerade v 5 for the old World of Darkness. So on the old WoD side, we have reboots of the old games - Vampire: the Masquerade, Werewolf: the Apocalypse, Mage: the Ascension, Wraith: the Oblivion, Changeling: the Dreaming. Sadly, I don't think Hunter: the Reckoning is going to make a comeback, though, by the sounds of it. Nor Mummy. And in the other universe, all the game lines from Vampire: the Masquerade up to Hunter: the Vigil and Geist: the Sin-Eaters are getting Second Editions to bring them into line with the new Chronicles of Darkness rulebook and game mechanics. The three newer games - Demon: the Descent, Beast: the Primordial and the forthcoming Deviant: the Renegades, have already been written up with the GMC mechanics. So, six years on from the release of V20, and thirteen years on from the Time of Judgment, we're in the position where new books are coming out, with new authors and artists, and where there's even a new Community Content initiative being opened for the WoD through DTRPG and a new World of Darkness MMORPG in the making which sounds like it has every chance of coming to pass. We've come some way from the dark days of 2003-2004, when it looked as if time was up for the old White Wolf. Oh, and one more thing. The old WW pawprint logo? They've brought that back, too.
  12. So, then, second editions all around. WoD Second Edition - News From GenCon 2014 Requiem, Forsaken, Awakening and Lost are all to be released as 2nd Edition, along with the Blue Book. We already have Vampire 2nd: it's called Blood and Smoke. Furthermore, there seems to be another new title slated for next year, going by the name Beast: the Primordial. No further news on that as yet.

  14. The latest White Wolf Onyx Path Monday Meeting blog Summary of the details so far:- Of course, I’m having a lot of talks with Phil Brucato about his development role on Mage20th, and I was having our very first discussions with Trinity Continuum uber-developer Ian Watson and (Trinity Continuum) Aeon developer John Snead about where we can take the whole Continuum in the years to come. More info on those specific projects as they continue to gestate. Currently: - Silent Knife (VtR) and The God Machine Chronicle Fiction Anthology (nWoD) have been approved by CCP and I need to see PoD hard proofs- maybe this week? - Left Handed Path (nMtA) is for sale at DriveThruRPG! - Conventionbook: NWO (cMtA) is approved by CCP and a PoD version is on its way to me. - God Machine Chronicle (nWoD) and Strix Chronicle Fiction Anthology (VtR) are getting written. GMC is almost done. - Mummy the Curse is coming to me as a 2nd proof. Going to submit plans for the MtC Kickstarter to KS and hope they approve it ASAP. Things last week bogged this down, unfortunately. - EX3 to say again: Slated for Feb 2013 now. - V20 Hunters Hunted 2 is in Editing and Art Direction this week, and Anarchs Unbound is next on his slate as he sends out the outline to writers. - Deluxe V20 Children of the Revolution in binding. The PDF and PoD versions is on sale at DriveThru RPG. If you didn’t get involved with the KS for this, now is your chance to pick up this beautiful and cool book. Justin and company went all out to present awesome characters, and the art is stunning. - Deluxe Werewolf 20th Anniversary Edition Kickstarter is over I’m looking at preparing the surveys to get back to folks. - Deluxe Mage the Ascension 20th Anniversary Edition has been confirmed for September-ish 2013.
