  2. Storypath’s Scale

We’ve been getting a lot of questions about Scale: what it is, when it applies, and how we adjudicate it. Hopefully this post will clarify that for those of you wondering how to use Scale in your game. Scale is a narrative term that is used as a shorthand to describe large differences between two things. We often use Scale as a comparison between two things, such as the speed of a human on foot versus that of a person on a bike, and further, to that of a car or plane. Scale is a comparison mechanic to help us decide if something or someone is so outclassing someone else that a normal roll with standard successes just doesn’t express that difference well enough. For example, we don’t talk about Danielle’s Scale for running around unless it comes into contrast with something else. If Danielle got into a foot race with Eddy, there is no Scale difference between us. Even if Eddy spent his time off training for marathons, his comparative Scale is not that much higher than Danielle’s, though his Athletics and Stamina are probably much higher, so his roll in the foot race is likely to be better than Danielle’s. If Danielle had to outrun a car, she’s unlikely to be able to do so, as the car (unless something was seriously wrong with it) is inherently able to go faster than any human can at sustained speeds. Scale is also not a universal constant. If a car has a Scale against Danielle in a race, it certainly doesn’t have Scale against her in a game of chess. In fact, Danielle’s Scale in that instance is so much laughably higher than the car’s that it isn’t even worth rolling or talking about. The car just can’t play chess. And in the same vein, the Scale of the car’s durability versus Danielle if she tried to punch the thing to stop it is so high that she wouldn’t even get a roll to try. Now, if we do need to make a roll in an attempt to see if Danielle’s sword can cut through the hood of the car to stop it — ha, no bare-fisted car assault for me! — we’re going to still apply the difference between the car’s durability Scale and the sword’s power Scale to the action as Enhancement at a rate of 2 Enhancement to 1 difference in Scale. We’ll likely apply it as the car’s Defense since that’s how many successes she needs to hurt the car. So, if something has Scale in one arena, it doesn’t necessarily have Scale in another. Scion does a good job of pointing out which areas might have Scale, but even it isn’t completely comprehensive. I suspect Aberrant to have the most comprehensive list available. Here’s some things to which Scale might apply: size, speed, power/force, durability/armor, leadership, socializing, mental calculations. This isn’t a comprehensive list, but it gives you an idea of how and when Scale might come into play. Dramatic vs. Narrative Scale Another thing we should talk about is the difference between dramatic and narrative Scale. The examples above mostly use Dramatic Scale, which is useful when a roll result matters such as in a contest between two actors. But sometimes Scale comes up in situations where opposition isn’t dramatic, so the action is more narrative. Think of this as chewing up the scenery. The difference between when something is narrative and when it is dramatic is a bit subjective, just like figuring out when a character needs to roll to accomplish an action vs. being able to just do it because they are super cool. Narrative Scale comes into play when a fine-grain application of successes doesn’t matter and the action that would use that system isn’t dramatic. Examples include a speedster getting to the other side of the city, a cyborg solving a complicated quantum equation, or a superpowered human bringing down a building. What we want to know is how many successes can we pile on it, i.e. “how well did we win against it?” The giant fighting robot with a huge power Scale can probably punch through buildings. And its power Scale compared to a building’s durability Scale is probably a bit higher, but we want to pile on enough successes to knock the thing down, but that durability is likely to result in a high difficulty, just because, well, it’s a skyscraper. So we don’t just roll and add a few Enhancement, we roll and multiply successes by the difference in Scale. We could also not roll at all and get some successes based on the dice pool and multiplying. When to Apply Scale Okay, so that’s how Scale works in the big picture, but how do we figure out when to apply Scale to a situation? Well, this is going to be a bit of a judgment call by the Storyguide, and sometimes specific powers will tell us when to apply Scale to the situation. For instance, if something makes sense to just be bigger, stronger, faster, more durable, or have more computational power in a way that is dramatically different, you’ll want to apply Scale to that aspect vs. the characters. Determining how much Scale difference is somewhat subjective, but that’s why we’ve included some examples in the book to try to give you a perspective on what real-world things have Scale in certain areas. So, when you make a 15-story tall monster for the characters to fight, you might want to throw some size Scale on it, which might also give it some durability Scale. But that prompts the question: When do characters get Scale? And the answer is: when a piece of equipment or the character’s powers say they do. Scions have a ton of Knacks that manipulate Scale for various things, giving them Scale for certain types of action, or reducing the Scale of something else for their action. Essentially, closing the distance between themselves and the god-like monsters against whom they fight. Characters in the Trinity Continuum get Scale through powers and sometimes equipment. Talents have Gifts, psions have Psi powers, and novas have Quantum Traits that all give them some access to Scale, which applies in certain arenas and on specific rolls, but not all rolls. Talents can spend Inspiration to increase their Scale for a single action, hopefully reducing the difference between themselves and something bigger than them, or making them so much better than the average human that it shows as Scale. Novas will have some ways to get inherent Scale bonuses to certain actions as described in the power. The underlying thing to remember is that Scale is both subjective (given by the Storyguide in places where it makes sense, because an item or creature deserves to narratively have Scale) and objective (given by the game book by a power or in a piece of equipment’s description). This means that sometimes your character will mostly get Scale through her powers or equipment via what the game book says and sometimes when the Storyguide says, and non-player characters will always get Scale because of both when the Storyguide decides it and because the book suggested it. Is Tier Scale? Short answer, no. There has been some question about how Tier effects Scale, and the longer answer is: It doesn’t, really. The Trinity Continuum had a chart in it which was left over from an earlier version that confused the issue, but all Tier does is describe a very out-of-game system, which is what the player’s target number on the die is for a success, with a base of 8 and moving down depending on Tier. Higher-Tier characters may have more access to abilities that give them Scale for certain actions, but they are not like race cars compared to humans just because they have a higher Tier. Scion vs. Trinity Continuum Scale is used and described somewhat differently in Scion than it is in the Trinity Continuum. Baseline humans in Scion are Scale 0, and each level of Scale is the narrative difference between baseline human and things that are just better than that. In the Trinity Continuum, the baseline human is set at Scale 1, because some things have a Scale of 0 elsewhere and we wanted to be able to reserve that for special cases. The difference in Scale between normal humans and other stuff in each of the various categories is still the same between Scion and the Trinity Continuum, so don’t let the baseline confuse you. 4. FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Onyx Path Publishing Launches Kickstarter for Pirates of Pugmire https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/200664283/pirates-of-pugmire-a-realms-of-pugmire-tabletop-rpg May 21, 2019 — Rich Thomas, founder and Creative Director of Onyx Path Publishing, announced today the Kickstarter to fund printing for the Pirates of Pugmire chronicle sourcebook to the Pugmire and Monarchies of Mau roleplaying games. Pirates of Pugmire is a family-friendly tabletop supplement set in the Realms of Pugmire, and is a collaboration between Onyx Path Publishing and Pugsteady. “Pirates of Pugmire is our first big supplement for both Pugmire and Monarchies of Mau, giving players a ready-to-go chronicle. Dogs and cats can form a pirate crew with lizards and birds, and sail over the Acid Sea for adventure and treasure! It’s the next big step for the Realms of Pugmire, and I’m excited to see what people do with their pirate characters!” said Eddy Webb, the creator of Pugmire. Pirates of Pugmire is a supplement that requires the Pugmire or Monarchies of Mau roleplaying games. Both games employ a streamlined version of 5th Edition rules. The new supplement contains: Playable lizard and bird characters Six new callings Rules for sailing and fighting on the Acid Sea Treasure and gunpowder weapons Setting details for Waterdog Port, Port Matthew, etc. …and three complete adventures! Delivery is planned for February in 2021 to account for stretch goals. This new supplement will be released to stores and will be printed as a hardcover digest with 7” x 10” dimensions. The Pirates of Pugmire Kickstarter will end on June 20, 2019. Pre-orders will be available via BackerKit following the end of the Kickstarter. For more details on Pugmire, you can watch Parts 1 and 2 of an actual play video on YouTube here: https://highlevelgames.libsyn.com/pugmire-actual-play-part-1 and https://highlevelgames.libsyn.com/pugmire-actual-play-episode-2. 5. Ahoy Matey! Tomorrow, Tuesday the 21st, at 2pm Eastern US time, we’re going live with the Pirates of Pugmire Kickstarter! So, as you might imagine, we’re pretty busy and excited over here. This is the first major sourcebook for Pugmire and Monarchies of Mau that we’re doing to expand on the lands (waters) outside of the main dog and cat areas, plus it will contain playable Lizard and Bird character info, and a three-part adventure chronicle. Very much the sort of additions to the first main books that are a load of fun for us to create – and we think to play! – and then you add in PIRATES!, and gunpowder and alchemical weapons, and new classes for the dogs and cats, and treasure chests, and sailing the Acid Sea, and, and, and… Yarrrr! The Realm illustration by Gunship Revolution What I’m saying is, it was a blast to work with Eddy on pulling this all together using his simplified 5e rules, and we hope folks will check it out! In fact, Eddy recorded design podcast installments all during the process, and combined them into last Friday’s Onyx Pathcast. He goes into our thinking at each step along the way; examining the thinking behind why we went with a Pirate theme for that part of the Realm of Pugmire, how the Birds and Reptiles came to be the uplifted pets for this book rather than say, Mice and Rats, and how an adventure chronicle needs to be designed so it works for beginning and experienced players alike. As always, you can find that Onyx Pathcast on your favorite podcast venues, as well as on our host, Podbean: https://onyxpathcast.podbean.com/ As we’ve done with our past bunch of Kickstarters, backers will get text sections throughout the KS and be able to have pretty much the full text before the KS is done. This helps us in two ways. One, having the text done before the KS means the chances of mis-timing the delivery of the project drop really far down – since so many of our previous KS delivery issues were getting the writing done and ready for layout. Second, this gives backers a chance to see just where we’re going with the book and to pledge accordingly. The raw text isn’t as easy to read as the finished layout, but it is all there. We want folks to pledge to help a project they want to see get into stores, not get stuck with a book they actually don’t like. V5 Chicago By Night illustration by Ken Meyer, Jr That’s not the only Realms of Pugmire news either! Fetch Quest, our family-friendly cooperative card game which Kickstarted last year, is going on sale in PDF and PoD versions on DTRPG and DriveThruCards on Wednesday! This is timed to coincide with FQ being available in your Friendly Local Gamestores as it hits retail thanks to entering distribution channels via our pals at Studio2. It is one more step to opening up new ways for you to have access to getting our games, so if your local retailer hasn’t ordered a few yet, let them know you’re interested, please! Speaking of FLGSs, one of the most supportive of Onyx Path‘s efforts these last years has been Noble Knight Games and they are having a huge sale right now that includes a bunch of our books including some of the harder to find 20th Anniversary Deluxes. Check it out here: https://www.nobleknight.com/Role-Playing-Games/Publisher/Onyx-Path-Publishing While we’re focusing on the Pirates of Pugmire kickstarter right now, we’ve got so many projects coming at you in the next few months, and some surprises we haven’t even talked about yet. In our Monday Meeting today, we were just jumping from game line to game line with releases, Advance PDFs, Backer PDFs, ongoing projects, and getting new creators involved. We’re putting the last touches on the StoryPath Community Content site for Scion, for example, which doesn’t show up on our project progress report, but which is going to be a pretty great place for any Scion creators waiting to jump in with their ideas for projects. The Realm illustration by Gunship Revolution Speaking of Scion, and how to play it – which we were, right? – Matthew, Eddy, and Dixie are going to be broadcasting a Scion Actual Play session via Google Hangouts Wednesday night. The Terrible Trio of Terrificness have been itching for a chance to play together, and this is the start of that event! We’ll have links later to the play, and it’ll be recorded and probably divided up for YouTube and Pathcast releases, but try and drop in to the Hangout as they play: it should be a blast, and informative if you are still working on how to get started with Scion. 9. Matthew Dawkins here, with Meghan Fitzgerald’s Maa-Kep draft for Mummy: The Curse 2nd Edition! Enjoy! Maa-Kep Shadow of Pillars Spies, Junta, Dapifers We would never say we know better, of course. It’s just that not taking our advice would be a mistake. I listened closely while he spoke. The people would love him, he said. They would offer their loyalty gladly, and in exchange they would gain power over their own fates. All it would take was a revolution, guns and fists raised high in silhouette against the orange blaze that would light up the night and banish tyranny. I could see his passion, his dedication. His logic was sound. His preparations were prudent. Even now, I laud his efforts. He looked up from his maps and schedules to beam a smile my way. He cut a handsome figure, there in the candlelight, and I admit his plan had merit. It was a temptation, as surely as any convincing bait ever is. I smiled, too. “So,” he said, “what do you think? Will it work?” “It would have,” I assured him. “It would have worked very well, were it not for one fatal flaw.” “What’s that?” he asked, concern writ plain in his bright eyes. “You told it to me.” Tradition of the Amulet The relics of the Maa-Kep are protective talismans, badges of office, engraved emblems that declare something to be true, and unobtrusive seals that can hold back power, carry it, or transfer it from place to place. Worn or mounted, they passively soak in magic and secrets. Like their amulets, the Maa-Kep are subtle protectors and preservers of ideas and ideals, those who quietly move power from hand to hand or rein it in when it needs limiting for the greater good. They serve quietly but never let anyone forget how important they are. They absorb information, only doling it out when and to whom they believe it’s warranted. They’re the secret police of the Arisen, and the beat they walk is all of civilization. They shepherd ideological purity; sometimes those ideas come from the Judges, sometimes from the mortals the mummies guide, and sometimes from their own meret’s priorities. Magnanimous in Victory, Blameless in Defeat Maa-Kep rarely take the spotlight themselves, instead gathering information and then reporting it to someone else who will do the forward-facing work for them. This is partially because they believe to take credit is to disrespect their place as tools and useful right hands, passed down to them from the Judges and the Shan’iatu. It’s also for plausible deniability in case something goes wrong. It’s not that they throw their friends under the bus, it’s just that it’s easier to smooth things over later when they’re not the ones catching the heat. They’re loyal to their leaders but unafraid to speak truth to power — if only behind closed doors. They shape civilization around them by forever making corrections and adjustments to everything and everyone, whether with one quiet word or with a brute force tool — like a fellow mummy or a well-armed cult. Foundations In Irem, the Dapifers were originally a collection of middle managers — slave drivers, overseers, and convoy masters. They gradually made themselves indispensable, demonstrating their dedication to making sure Irem’s caravans ran on time and their understanding of the inner workings of empire. The Shan’iatu eventually recognized the guild’s potential to be so much more, and elevated the Maa-Kep to act as secret police whose true purpose was hidden from the other guilds. They preserved the ideological purity of Irem, making sure no one strayed from the path to glory and conquest in the gods’ names. The Wheel Turns The guild’s secret duty didn’t stay hidden forever; by the time of the Rite of Return, the others knew why the Spies had been chosen. Their fellow mummies don’t always remember it, though. Having a Maa-Kep in the meret is a slow pendulum swinging between trust and suspicion, as her comrades rediscover her covert goals over and over again; but by the time they remember, she’s always made herself too damn useful to ignore. To this day, it’s gauche to talk about it in polite company, and usually the meret’s cults other than the Maa-Kep’s itself aren’t in the know even once the Arisen remember. To those who don’t, the Junta are valued advisors and scouts, playing the roles of coordinator, majordomo, surveillant, appraiser, and yes, spy — it’s just that few realize this spy is always a double agent, even if it’s for their own good. (Usually.) Maa-Kep are kingmakers and internal affairs agents, watchdogs and stewards. They are project managers who support their merets and cults, rooting out incompetence, corruption, and untrustworthy sorts. They watch over their allies but also constantly evaluate them. To those who do remember their purpose, a Dapifer is all those things as well as the conductor who guides the meret’s train along the rails and keeps everybody else in line. Some appreciate it; some resent it; and many feel differently depending on the Descent. The Maa-Kep’s cults are extensions of themselves by way of surveillance, information gathering, and spreading out like a web of eyes and ears with the mummy at its center. The Junta are men in black and spymasters, but also keen investigators with cults full of detectives and journalists, and mysterious strangers who waltz into someone’s life, help him out for no apparent reason, then vanish into the ether — arranging people and events on a grand scale humans can’t see. They’re not the ones who give a man a fish; they’re the ones who teach him to fish by writing the manual and having minions leave it conspicuously on his desk without ever talking to him, watching him from across the street with binoculars while he reads it, and then expecting him to do it right. Once, the Dapifers weren’t the ones with the big picture vision, instead enforcing that of the Shan’iatu. They were content with that… but the Shan’iatu aren’t around anymore. The Maa-Kep view themselves as the Shan’iatu’s true successors because they enshrine Irem’s highest ideals. They know how things are really supposed to be done, and how to make sure they’re done that way. The less they remember or care about their original mandates, the more they build their own versions of the grand vision in their minds and enforce those. They insist it’s what the Judges want — who better to keep the seats warm for the great sorcerers than the ones who stood by their right hands so long ago? As Sothis Ascends A Maa-Kep deals with immortality by resting assured she can rely on her powers of observation and knowledge-gathering to catch her up on anything she forgets or misses, and by staying focused on the minutiae. She can’t contemplate the existential dread of knowing she’ll probably outlive the human race if she’s busy micromanaging everyone else and poking her nose into their business 24/7. She might miss old friends, but at least she got to know them better than anyone else did — probably better than they knew themselves. Thus, they live on in her. The patterns the Spies see and perpetuate in the world are those of behavior, relationships, and philosophies. They track the principles every society values and how it maintains its high road, or falls from it into a subversion or even perversion of its purported ideals. They understand how civilizations rise and fall by the integrity of their beliefs, their dedication compared to their hypocrisy, and how well their people work together. Starfall A Junta turns her back on the Judges because she sees what she believes is a flaw in the gods’ plans or comes to believe that something has corrupted even those lords of Duat. Those who grow to resent their servitude don’t do so because they hate the concept of serving, but because they feel they’re not being utilized to their full potential, they’re being ordered to uphold an impure idea, or their elegant work is stymied by frustrating obstacles beyond their control. Others fall to corruption themselves, losing faith in their purpose after standing vigil for so long or craving the spotlight after lifetimes of hiding in the shadows. Vessels: Amulets Who We Are Internal affairs officer in a metropolitan police department, monitoring society’s dedication to its ideals through its law enforcement Deep-cover espionage agent, collecting intelligence about cultures and nations around the world and only reporting back what will push her employers to act the way she wants them to Project manager at a large company, raking in money so the cult can donate large sums to ideologically desirable groups Butler and house manager for a rich and bustling estate belonging to another Arisen and consisting of generations of a dynasty cult Trusted advisor to an influential politician or crime lord, whispering and nudging to influence governments, underworlds, or both Beyond the Shadow of Pillars Mesen-Nebu: You make an excellent vanguard, even if your materialistic streak makes you a bit of an embarrassment. We’d never say so to your face, though. Sesha-Hebsu: Without you, many valuable secrets would be lost. Without us, your judgments would ring hollow. Su-Menent: Curb your worst impulses, my friend. Your work is important, but not as important as you think it is. Tef-Aabhi: It’s an intricate dance we weave, isn’t it? We both have long memories, but yours are so much more reliable. Pity, that. Wadjet-Itja: One day, we’ll dig up the secret of how you managed your chicanery, and on that day, you’ll wish you never pretended at immortality. View the full article
  10. Since next week we’ll be going into full New Kickstarter mode for the Pirates of Pugmire KS, let me catch up on a few things we talked about in the Monday Meeting today, and expand on our thinking about attending conventions. First, thanks to everyone who sent in questions for my interview with the Onyx Pathcast! We had a great recording session last week that, no surprise, ran extra long. So many things to cover, and I wanted to go into enough detail to deliver more than a corporate sound-bite. Next, yes, I’m still all fuzzy-headed from pollen allergies. Thanks to all who asked, or provided solutions – medical or otherwise! And, as far as I’ve been informed, all the backer rewards for the Scion Kickstarter should now be out in the trucks/planes/tricycles of the shippers our fulfillment shipper works with. USPS and Fedex mostly, but these days it is hard to pin that down as they all seem to subcontract with each other. V5 Chicago art by Amy Wilkins In a little over two weeks, Eddy, Mighty Matt McElroy, and myself, will be flying over to Merrie Olde Englande for UK Games Expo! This is going to be extremely cool for me, as my family pretty much all came from that part of the world, and I’ve never visited before. Plus, we’ll be hanging out with Matthew Dawkins, and meeting Steffie de Vann, John Burke, Chris Allen, and Klara Herbol face-to-face for the first time! We are good at using other methods of talking together like Skype, and generally love the virtual office thing, but hanging out and getting to know our creators is still the best way to really understand each other. But our kumbaya moments aren’t all we’ll be doing at the con! The gang are running all sorts of demo games, including a Chronicles of Darkness tournament where they’ll be running games for the CofD game lines and one player will advance to a special session of the Contagion Chronicle run by developer Matthew Dawkins! This is a kind of connected con game we’ve never actually done officially before, and we’re really looking forward to how things play out! Plus, the are a lot of other demo games going on including Fetch Quest and Prince’s Gambit, for those who need a card game break from their roleplaying sessions. I’ll be in meetings and podcasts and other interviews, but hope to get a chance to sit near, if not in, and enjoy the fun. So if you’re going, and want to chat, you can stop by the Onyx Path booth and find out where we all are if you can’t find us there. One thing you won’t find there will be us selling games and books at the booth. We’re stepping away from making the booth a sales venue at UKGE, and we’ll be directing folks who want to buy our stuff to our friends at Leisure Games! In fact, here’s a handy map now of the exhibition floor: Now, UK Games Expo is not the only convention we are trying out this new booth strategy with. In fact, we are going all in at Gen Con 2019, this year, and we’re not having any booth at all there. Instead, we have pretty much doubled the number of demo games that will be run there, we’re still having our Onyx Path panels, and you’ll still be able to buy our games and books and stuff at the Studio2 and Indie Press Revolution booths. Unsurprisingly, we have a map for that too! But Rich, why? Why not carry on the tradition of the Gen Con booth? You guys have made a big deal out of your Gen Con planning every year since Onyx Path started (even a few years before that, actually). The answer is in the question really. It has been a big deal. A huge deal. One that sucked up our time, effort, planning, attention, and cash. Gen Con exerted a disproportionate gravity every year for the effect it had on our company and community. As a chance to see the same folks year after year, the booth was a great focal point – one we are going to try and move to the panels and demo tables. I never saw the booth as a “sales venue” nor wanted us to drive it in that direction. That’s just not how I’ve thought of our presence there; it was always more of a communications opportunity. But what we’ve seen these past few years is that the need for the booth to be our big chance to talk to folks has really been left in the dust by our online presence. For example, all last year at Gen Con, I heard from both new and long time members of our community how they love the Onyx Pathcast, or chatting with Dixie on Slack, or Matt and Ian on our Facebook pages. And this hasn’t just affected the booth. For example, we used to get a huge reaction when we released the new Onyx Path Brochure at Gen Con – now folks have told us that they already know most of what’s in there because of our social media and these very Monday Meeting Notes blogs, so we’ll be debuting a new kind of brochure at the Mid-Winter Convention this year. Shunned By The Moon art by Jeff (Silver Fox) Holt Once we looked at all that; really went into the different ways that folks are getting info and a chance to connect with the company, we could see that the booth was a massive drain on our time in terms of running it, and a pretty big drain on cash that we could use in more proactive ways, and that there were better ways we could use to communicate. Put that all together, and we’re going to try doing things sans booth this year and see what happens. Maybe it is a horrible idea. We’ll see. But if we just “do what we’ve always done” without examining those strategies to see if they are effective, we’re headed for the tar pits. And nobody wants that. We want to evolve so that we can continue to deliver you: Many Worlds, One Path! BLURBS! KICKSTARTER: Our Pirates of Pugmire Kickstarter will be starting at 2pm Eastern US time on Tuesday, May 21st! 14. Steffie here, developer for the upcoming Legendlore RPG. What’s the Legendlore RPG, you ask? I’m here to tell you. Legendlore was originally a comic, first published by Arrow Comics in 1986 and since procured by Caliber Comics, about four people who fall through a Crossing into the Realm. The Realm is home to all kinds of fantasy creatures from elves to dragons, and the characters discover they too have ‘fantasy powers’ – the jock becomes a Fighter, while the bookish one becomes a Wizard, and so on. They go on all sorts of adventures and some of them eventually find their way back to Earth. This is the basic premise of the Legendlore RPG. You Cross into the Realm, where Steffie the author / game developer becomes Steffie the hairfoot Bard, or maybe Steffie the elven Sorcerer – I didn’t stat myself yet. You can change any characteristics you like. For example I have hay fever and glasses, and I choose if my Legendlore self keeps or drops those. Your identity might not always match your outward physique, but your Legendlore character does. We also updated the 1980’s setting so Realmborn characters represent all ethnicities, genders, and sexualities. No one in the Realm will bat an eyelash at your agender panromantic self. We have an amazing team of writers on Legendlore: Elizabeth Chaipraditkul, Jacqueline Penny Fallows-Hart, Travis Legge, Megan Mackie, Ashley May, Katriel Paige, Roman Trevisanut, Vera Vartanian, and Ashley Warren. You probably recognize some/all of them from other OPP projects, the Storyteller Vault, or the DM’s Guild. Feel free to leave comments (be nice!) or questions for them below, and I’ll poke them this way. And now, a preview of Chapter 2: Crossing and Legend by Katriel Paige. Note: This is the unedited version, so no need to pick out spelling or grammatical errors. Beyond that, please do let us know what you think! Chapter 2 – Crossing & Legend A Crossing can be anything. Storytellers across the Realm sing of strangers down on their luck, selling off their possessions, until they come across a bracelet from their childhood: in the time of their greatest need, that bracelet became a Crossing, the stranger entered a land new to them, and their story began anew. Tales from the Grey Hills to as far as the Erebus Sea also tell of mirrors or pools of water being Crossings, as throughout time many peoples have wondered if other worlds lay just behind their reflections on the surface. But it is not just mirrors, or pools, or bracelets: a Crossing can be a battered suitcase locked in an attic and forgotten until just recently. A Crossing can be a hatbox just as easily as a Crossing can take the shape of a crystal pendant necklace, a porcelain doll, a crayon drawing or folded papercraft, it can be simple or it can be intricate. A Crossing does not fully sit in either the world of Earth or of the Realm: it can be anaction figure just as easily as it can be a specific and easily missed setting on an AM radio dial, just as it can be a leatherbound journal gift set with its brass lock and key. The item that acts as a Crossing can be five dollars or fifty, a brightly colored bauble from a vending machine from a child’s pocket money or a timeless treasure from an attic long forgotten with excellent craftsmanship worth a fortune – if it was ever sold. Legacies You are not the first from Earth to encounter the nations of the Realm. The Realm has had Visitors before, and each time these Visitors left something with the Realm: whether it be a new word, or even accidental technology. Some Visitors became stranded and formed their own communities out of an immediate need for survival. These communities can still be found in the Realm, though they tend to be pockets of isolation and have their own customs and concerns even if they are within the boundaries of other nations. Sharp-eyed Visitors may recognize aspects of their world turned into phenomena: in the depths of a forest, they may encounter a glider plane abandoned with vines anchoring it to the soil, its metal rusting, its markings faded under a strange sun its paint was never meant to withstand. These phenomena are considered Strange Things throughout the Realm. Legends Just as Earth had impacts on the Realm, the Realm can change a Visitor from Earth. Legends are the destinies Visitors may have when Crossing into the Realm: it is part of their Crossing, part of their destiny. Each character has their own Legend, which affects the story and is built up through relatively minor actions as well as through more obviously weighty choices. Legends are things like “Avatar of Peace” or “Lord of Dragons” or “Heir to the Mountain”: they represent the destiny of You (your character) and mechanically can resemble backgrounds. Perhaps the You you want to be in the Realm is trying to not spread any more violence than absolutely necessary for self-defense. As a Player, you might want their destiny to reflect that commitment to peaceful solutions and to avoid continuing cycles of revenge and violence: thus the “Avatar of Peace” Legend. The seeds of that legend are there, but how does that affect You throughout Your adventures in the Realm? Interested in playing Legendlore? Also going to the UK Games Expo? Great! 15. That illo, by Andrew Trabbold for Shunned By the Moon, the Werewolf: The Forsaken Night Horrors book, btw, is how my brain is right now. It’s high pollen time right now here in the Spring on Macungie Mountain, and every thought I need seems to require being pulled out of a cotton candy wadding around my brain. I am a zombie, koo koo kachew! So, bear with me on this MMN blog. I’m going to keep it a tad shorter than usual – hey, stop cheering – and there might be more mis-typing. Don’t worry, I’ll leave corrections on Pg XX. V5 Chicago By Night art by Michael Gaydos That’s the Fuzzy in our blog Title today, now here’s some of the Social part: the last couple three weeks, you may have noticed that we were doing some damage control on the missing errata for our Scion books. I wrote updates here on where things had progressed each week so there’d be a source of info and a curated space for that info to be processed. A fair number of backers wanted more info, or wanted what they wanted right away, and we really we not in a position to answer anyone’s questions until the team could try and figure out what happened. I asked for patience, and explained why with what info we had upfront, and there were a lot of people who stood up and let everyone know that how we were handling things made sense to them. Giant thanks to all of you! Now, what I wanted to explain is really for the benefit of the people who tried to post their thoughts/questions in the blog comments section during this time but didn’t see them come up. There were a few nasty comments, and a few inquiring comments, and I had reasons for blocking both. For those of you who were asking questions, who just wanted more answers than I had to give, I’m sorry you were shut down. I posted the comment in the first blog’s comment section and reiterated that I wasn’t going to engage on further questions in order to spend our time finding out what happened, so I hope you understand what predicated that decision, but still, I hope you’ll try and comment further in the future. For those who wanted to post angry, nasty, comments…that’s not going to fly here. It’s not about your emotions, it’s about how they are expressed and whether it’s fair to allow one person’s feelings to upset and drive off other posters. Nasty posts might feel good to the poster, but they are awful to read, particularly if the reader isn’t here for Scion, but for the Contagion Chronicle, for example. And I know that nastiness has this effect because after almost every time we ban someone from the forums because of a nasty series of posts, I get private messages from forumites whose forum names I’ve never read before to thank me, and usually explaining that they were afraid to post to that forum because of the virulence of that banned poster. So there’s that. We want our community to feel good interacting with us and the rest of the community, and will curate our social media spaces to try and enable that. Shunned By The Moon art by Leo Albiero From the serious to the ridiculous: this week I’ll be sitting down for an interview with Dixie and Eddy, I think, as Matthew is visiting the Queen for their monthly pow-wow. It’s in celebration of the One Year Anniversary of the Onyx Pathcast! Why, it’s hard to believe that just a year ago, three bright-eyed and eager young podcasters came to me with a crazy idea – why couldn’t they do an Onyx Path focused one? Why not indeed? In fact, they could! And it’s really, really good! We’re so glad that folks have kept listening and supporting it, so I’m sure we’ll talk about that. If any of you have questions you’d like them to ask me – or you’d like me to ask them! – please pop the questions into the comments section below. With that, I’m talking my pollen-addled brain and shuffling away. Somewhere in there, I’ll be musing all about our: Many Worlds, One Path! BLURBS!
