When I first started hiring writers to work in the Realms of Pugmire, I knew I had to articulate the tone the game goes for. For years I got by with a sense of “I’ll know it when I see it,” but that wasn’t sustainable. Going forward, I had to spell out exactly how Pugmire uses concepts like grief, loss, and humor. So I wrote a lengthy essay/rant about the topic for my writer’s guide, and now I’m sharing it with all of you for the first time ever. Enjoy!

Let me start by spelling it out: Pugmire is ultimately about the power and danger of nostalgia. Everything (intentionally or unintentionally) points back to this concept, whether it’s the fact that dogs worship an idealized humanity or the intentional use of Dungeons & Dragons as a mechanical base. That’s the secret lurking at the heart of this world — Pugmire is built to evoke fondness for what has come before.

Taken a step further, nostalgia can be funny or it can be sad, and in an ideal world, Pugmire strives to be both. In the very first version of the game (ominously titled “The Fall of Pugmire”), the elegiac qualities were very strong, and melancholy has a strong connection with nostalgia. And the funny thing about nostalgia is that it works primarily because we don’t clearly remember all the details. Thus, a story evocative of nostalgia is not one that’s a slavish reproduction of what came before, but evocative of the high points, the parts that really resonated, the parts that mattered. That’s why the world of Pugmire isn’t exactly recognizable as our own, why the dogs aren’t exactly right about what humanity was, and why the game system isn’t exactly like old-school gaming. It’s the best bits of all of those things, blended together into one seamless whole.

But Pugmire is being experienced by people, and in particular people with at least a moderate knowledge or affinity for fantasy fiction and gaming tropes. As such, it takes on an additional meta-textual context. These people want to enjoy that nostalgic and elegiac feel because of a love of animals (including those pets that have passed on), a desire for a simple game experience (including mourning the days when they had the time to play more complex games), or an increasingly nebulous definition of “light-hearted fun.” It’s probably a combination of all of these. In my experience, “simple” is usually code for “I recognize these tropes” along with “I have very few barriers to understanding this.” Trying to understand “fun” would require a whole book (and, indeed, such books have been written), but for our purposes it generally tends to mean “I want to laugh a bit, ideally with friends and family.”

But I reject the notion that “simple” and “fun” are at odds with challenging narratives. In fact, because of the meta-textual context — these are people who know how fantasy tropes work, after all — we’re in a place where we can twist and subvert those tropes to make for engaging stories. We laugh at the cat that tries to act like a dog, or nobles that enforce a strong lineage to pass on humorous familial traits, or characters that are aggressively supportive of concepts like “be a good dog.” And yet, we’re left with the vague sense that maybe these things aren’t okay when applied to people. But if these dogs and cats and other uplifted animals are presented as authentic characters, as authentic people, then maybe it’s not okay when applied to them, either. This gives us leave to take problematic tropes like “evil races” “rescuing the princess” and change them in ways that still make sense in the world, and thus still feel authentic. This is why cats aren’t evil, and why Princess Yosha Pug goes out to adventure and can rescue herself, thank you very much. And yet, in them we still recognize different (and, frankly, more inclusive) concepts like “the people we don’t trust” and “nobility as morally superior leaders.”

This also applies to the humor. If the meta-narrative humor drowns out the story context, then the humor has failed. “Be a good dog” works because the humor supports and reinforces the concept — there are plenty of comic strips that play off the religious overtones of the phrase, and that’s exactly where we go as well. Having a Shiba Inu head of the Church of Man with the title of “Doge” drowns out anything that character might do that’s narratively interesting. A few characters are intentionally humorous and can get away with more (look to Alastair Afghan as an example), but all in all the humor should work with the world concept, not against it.

None of this needs to be done intentionally as you work on Pugmire. In fact, in my experience, it’s better if it’s not foremost in my mind when I write. But it does help when going back and deciding what makes for “authentic Pugmire” or not. Since this is an evolving property, my response to a lot of things will be some form of “I’ll know it when I see it,” but the above rant may help you to see it too, before it even gets to me.

Will You Become the World Champion of Darkness?

White Wolf and the World of Darkness Berlin 2017 convention and games festival are proud to release a World of Darkness-themed quiz app for iOS and Android. You can download World of Darkness Quizima for free to compete against your friends in a World of Darkness- and thematically related trivia contest!

The addictive app is fun in itself, but it also provides the digital qualifying round for the convention’s “World Championships of Darkness” event. The World of Darkness: Berlin team and app makers Planeto will monitor the system’s backend to extract a definitive high score list of Digital Champions of Darkness. Anyone participating the game who is attending World of Darkness: Berlin is invited to compete in the live finals. During the month of April, participants who score high enough will be entered into a lottery for free admittance to the World of Darkness: Berlin convention.

“The events at World of Darkness: Berlin are all about having fun together and celebrating a shared love for White Wolf’s World of Darkness in all its forms, everything from tabletop rpgs, larps and card games to celebrating fan passion – regardless whether it’s Storytelling, art, game design, writing, costumes or lore and trivia. We’ve been looking for a way to include White Wolf fans who are unable to attend World of Darkness: Berlin, yet want to participate in the fun,” explains Participation | Design | Agency AB producer Johanna Koljonen.

“We’re very excited to partner with the top Swedish quiz company Planeto to make this happen and are thrilled that fans around the world will be able to qualify through the app for the Berlin trivia contest event in advance” said White Wolf CEO, Tobias Sjögren.

World of Darkness Quizima is an official White Wolf licensed product that exists thanks to the dedication and expertise of the fans that willed it into existence. The questions were written by an international team of volunteers: Fabio Garbo, Søren Hjorth, Minna Joki, Henrik Klippström, Federica Sustersic and Jere Tupala.

The production and editorial management was executed by Participation Design Agency,  the producing team responsible for the World of Darkness: Berlin Convention and games festival.

Members of the Original White Wolf: Stewart Wieck, Mike Tinney, Steve Wieck, Mark Rein-Hagen, Rich Thomas, and Travis Williams (photo at The Grand Masquerade 2016 in New Orleans)

As the company CEO I don’t have the chance to pause for reflection as often as I would like. However earlier this year everyone in the White Wolf community was saddened to learn about the untimely passing of White Wolf co-founder Stewart Wieck, and this has obviously led me to think more than usual about the amazingly talented, knowledgeable, and passionate people who works with us on a daily basis and how they shape our future.

I certainly feel blessed by and have a strong enthusiasm for the incredible group working together on the future of the World of Darkness and I want to take this opportunity to let you know who they are and what they are working on right now.

First, we have the small but strong team of five itself, White Wolf Entertainment in Stockholm, who oversee the daily work forward. Martin Ericsson as our Lead Story Teller and Karim Muammar as Chief Editor are working on expanding the World of Darkness metaplot and coordinating the creative work with all our partners. Our business development side is handled by Dhaunae DeVir who works mainly with distribution and availability of our products including everything from board games to books and computer games, and Shane DeFreest whose main focus is on our great community and the expanding events business. My role as CEO is to try to make sure that we have everything in place that we need to achieve our goals, and to use the experience I gathered during my 21 years as a business professional to help and support my team. And though we don’t interact much with our sister company Paradox Interactive on a daily basis we are extremely fortunate to have their Finance and Legal team supporting us pretty much every day.

This brings me to our licensing partners, where we are very lucky to have people with a wide variety of backgrounds, including ex-White Wolf employees like Steve Wieck at DriveThruRPG and Rich Thomas at Onyx Path Publishing. Onyx Path is among many other things working on a new Vampire the Masquerade card game product created by Justin Achilli, Prince’s Gambit. Both companies employ many amazing people—too many to fit here easily—but a special shout out to Matt McElroy, and a special thanks to all the writers contracted by Onyx Path to create great books set in the World of Darkness, the Chronicles of Darkness, and Exalted. Jason Carl and his team at By Night Studios continue to publish products for Mind’s Eye Theatre including this year’s MET Werewolf: The Apocalypse and the new MET Changeling: The Dreaming Alpha Slice.

Over on the events side, Dziobak LARP Studios is producing the second run of Convention of Thorns LARP this October 2017 and planning even more immersive events next year. Johanna, Bjarke and Juhana and their team at Participation Design Agency, who produced several End of the Line LARPs and the World of Darkness Berlin convention, will be working with us on more cutting-edge events, the latest being Parliament of Shadows in Brussels.

The production company Lucky Day have done a fantastic documentary that summarizes the history of World of Darkness and White Wolf which premiered in October 2017 at the Sitges film festival, and that in later 2018 will find its way into TV and streaming. Many thanks to Kevin Lee and the team at Lucky Day for telling this story and we wish them best of luck with their documentary.

Our great community clubs that are run by so many passionate people deserves a special accolade: the number of fans working on great LARP chronicles and events are too many to mention individually, but we recognize how important they are to the future prosperity of the World of Darkness. Thanks also to the great work of Shane Robinett and his team at Knetik, we will be able to support our community in so much better ways in the future through www.worldofdarkness.com.

Development on a Werewolf: The Apocalypse PC/console game is continuing at Focus Home Entertainment and Cyanide Studios, who shared some of the concept art with fans at E3 and GenCon this year. The next computer game release will be the exciting audio game product from Earplay, led by Jonathon Myers and including the talents of Eddy Webb and Richard Dansky. You can expect many more announcements about video games in the future.

Finally, we have the great team working on Vampire: The Masquerade 5th Edition roleplaying game, including Mary Lee as Art Director, Kenneth Hite as Lead Designer, and Jason Carl as Producer. The development team also now includes the talents of Consulting Developer Mark Rein-Hagen, Lead Editor Jennifer Smith, and writers Matthew Dawkins and Jason Andrew. Their next big milestone is another playtest at PAX Unplugged in Philadelphia (17-19 November).

That’s a lot of amazing people and yet I’ve managed to mention only a few: many more deserve acknowledgment and will be introduced to you in the future. One of the great strengths of the licensing model that we use is that we get to work with some of the incredible teams and people, as they focus on what they do best.

I would lastly like to extend my warmest gratitude to all the White Wolf fan community that has been such a great help and support to us since we restarted White Wolf in October 2015. You inspire everything that we do at White Wolf, every day. Thank you all, it is thanks to you that we can have all these amazing people working on restoring World of Darkness to its rightful stature.

  • Tobias Sjögren, CEO White Wolf Entertainment

P.S. Stewart, we miss you so much and not having you around while we re-establish World of Darkness breaks our hearts. But as we expect heaven to be pretty much playing rpg’s 24/7, we rest assured that you are doing just great.

A comment in the comments section, of all things, basically asked why every time they look here lately there’s dogs all over the place. The art samples have dogs in them, the Kickstarter news is about the dog card game. Dogs, dogs, dogs!

Part of that is, of course, coincidence or a coming together of multiple projects for a line with three Kickstarters and a bunch of projects which came out of those KS Stretch Goals. And it helps that Eddy Webb is the kind of developer who pushes to get projects finished as close to estimate, and sometimes earlier, as possible.

So, woof, woof, woof go the dogs.

In a week or so, maybe it’ll seem like only WoD books are mentioned, or CofD, or Exalted. And so on. It’s all pretty much coincidence as to how books of a particular setting come out together, as we have projects from all of our “worlds” going at all times at different stages of creation, and a lot depends on which projects you’re waiting for.

This also applies to Kickstarter news when you don’t back Kickstarters, or Onyx Pathcast news when you don’t listen to podcasts, or convention info and our plans for FangCon 2019 when you can’t get to the convention.

So for this blog, I try to mix the things I mention and art I put up to give a bit of a taste of as many game worlds and activities we’re doing as I can so that I’m touching on something, I hope, that is relevant to YOU. But, if coincidence gives me mostly Exalted stuff that week, I’m mostly going to be relaying that, with a mix of other things if I have other things on my radar to share.

No Marketing department, no professional writer here – just your dear old Uncle Rich and whatever we’ve discussed during the Monday Meeting.

(Which reminds me, not only is last week’s Onyx Pathcast a great inside look at the way we conceive, create, and publish our projects, but this Friday yours truly is grilled by Dixie and Matthew for a very special episode. You’ll laugh, you’ll cry. You’ll learn secrets of the early days of White Wolf right into Onyx Path.)

Which means, it’s time for some quick topic hits:

In a similar conversation to the one above, there was a poster that remarked how the first mention of Pugmire made him wonder just what Onyx Path was turning into. Then, he dug into the background of Pugmire and realized there was a lot more to it than a funny animal TTRPG.

My response must be that we aren’t turning into anything different than we’ve always been on track to be: a publisher who creates amazing and engaging worlds for folks to explore. And that the poster was dead-on right to identify that one of the threads that combine all of our projects is that there are depths built into our worlds that reward players who look into them.

Some of that is a heritage from old White Wolf we’ve been fortunate to bring to the fore, and use as models for what works and what doesn’t, and part of the depth is built in by our amazing creative teams who know they can do that kind of game and world building with us.

We’ve been having other great conversations on our Onyx Path Publishing Discussion Group on Facebook, which you might be able to get to through this link: https://www.facebook.com/groups/419273928504341/ I haven’t had a chance to join in to the discussions yet, but hope to very soon.

I haven’t been able to jump in because these last couple of months have been a combination of working up and with contracts for new projects and licenses, putting in pitches for projects, and getting Changing 20th, Prince’s Gambit, and soon, V20 Beckett’s Jyhad Diary Kickstarter rewards out to backers. It’s a bit of an endurance challenge, so I’m lucky to have maxed out Fortitude.

Plus, I’m trying to keep up the communication with backers for the Scarred Lands Kickstarter that the late Stewart Wieck had started for our two companies, while representatives for his company, Nocturnal Media, work to get the KS fulfilled and shipped. So, four KSs shipping around a month from each other.

The flip-side is…we’re getting out four KSs’ rewards to our backers!

Finally, I think I might have mentioned this before, but one of my working methods when creating a new setting, or establishing an overall art “look” for a project, is to take what Allen Moore calls a “high altitude pass” and gather all sorts of reference material and sift through it without trying to force any sort of viewpoint over it.

For visuals, this is very often seeing what registers as “right”. What feels like the sort of feeling we want the setting to give players. Although we can pull huge amounts of story from an illustration (picture=1K words), very often a far more lasting impression comes from the viewer’s emotional reaction. I’ve been doing this pass for Aberrant for about 3 months now, and we’re getting to the decision point on creating an artist list, and actually further back for when I did the initial designs for all four Trinity Continuum main books.

Right now though, I’m reading through a collection of 1950’s EC Weird Science comics in preparation for establishing the art for They Came From Beneath the Sea!. Developer Matthew Dawkins and I already have a strong idea overall based on the films of the time and some TV, but in a lot of ways looking at illustration when thinking about kinds of illustrations is actually more directly what I need.

Not going to go too far into the history of EC right now, although I could and it is a fascinating tale of the rise and fall of a publisher, but suffice to say that their comics were a gigantic influence on both the comics that came after, and on the generation of creators who wrote science fiction in all media (including TTRPGs) for decades to come.

So I get to read comics collections as part of my job. It is tough. But it’s what ya gotta do in order to explore:

Many Worlds, One Path!

BLURBS!

KICKSTARTER:

Fetch-Quest-Logo-for-Blog-300x64.png

Fetch Quest, the adventure card game set in the Realms of Pugmire went live last Tuesday, May 22 and funded in under a day, and now we’re over 250% funded and have added a group of six cats from the Monarchies of Mau to the game as alternative adventurers via Stretch Goals!

This is definitely a game that needs to be spread by word of mouth, so please let your friends and family know about this game of good dogs (and cats!) out to fetch what Man has left behind!

TODAY’S REASON TO CELEBRATE: In 1783 the Montgolfier brothers publicly demonstrate their montgolfière (hot air balloon). A year later in 1784, Élisabeth Thible becomes the first woman to fly in an untethered hot air balloon. Her flight covers four kilometres in 45 minutes, and reached 1,500 metres altitude (estimated). In the future, people of all genders are able to fly in balloons and zeppelins to work and to visit friends, at least if any pulp setting ever can be believed!

Changeling: The Lost 2nd art by Michael Gaydos

Rich is away this week (see last week’s MMN) and I have temporarily taken over the blog! Speaking of the blog, we’re working hard to get a lot more content for you in addition to our new releases featured on Wednesday and our previews of fiction on Fridays. This includes more excerpts and previews of upcoming books, developer notes about games and settings they are working on (take a look at Eddy Webb’s Claws and Effect launch post for example), plus a new series all about creating characters for our RPGs. We’re kicking off this new series tomorrow with a post from Bill Bodden, who’s work you maybe have read in Ghouls & Revenants and Madison by Night for V20, plus upcoming books like World of Darkness: Ghost Hunters and Pan’s Guide for New Pioneers for Pugmire. Bill will start a bi-monthly series with a new character for Exalted 3rd Edition and then move on to other core books. Plus we’ll have guest posts from other Onyx Path crewmembers and maybe a few surprises along the way, too. Our goal with this series is twofold: first, take some of the intimidation out of building new characters and (hopefully) encourage new fans to jump in and play and second, nudge experienced players to dive deeper into their players and think about this important aspect of gaming.

In other exciting news, last week Rich announced the Salrecian Vault community content program for our Scarred Lands fantasy setting. Much like the Canis Minor community content program for the Pugmire RPG, we’re getting ready to launch this community content program soon. You can read the current FAQ for the upcoming program here on our forums. I’m really looking forward to seeing new adventures, classes, Ghelspad locations, and more! Remember, our Scarred Lands program will be open to both Pathfinder and Dungeons and Dragons Fifth Edition systems. If you’re curious about this setting, all you need is the Scarred Lands Player’s Guide to get started.

White Wolf’s V5 distribution partner announced.

Our friends at White Wolf just announced that Modiphius will be acting as their distributor for Vampire: The Masquerade Fifth Edition. Since there’s already been some confusion about this deal, remember this is about distribution as opposed to publishing. White Wolf is still designing and producing the new corebook in hous, and Modiphius acts as the hub to ship this new rulebook out to stores and more. If you’re curious about this deal, you can read the press release on the White Wolf Facebook page, and further questions should be directed toward them. Stay tuned to the Monday Meeting Notes and our Gen Con panels for more Vampire news from the Onyx Path team.

Speaking of Gen Con…

Event Registration for Gen Con Indy just went live yesterday! You can search and sign-up for a ton of games, panels, and more! The Wrecking Crew will be on hand running all kinds of World of Darkness, Pugmire, Scion, Chronicles of Darkness, and other games the entire convention. We will also have a demo crew in the Onyx Path booth (#501 again). If you are going to be at Gen Con, we’d love to hear from you.

Fighting the Machine is like fighting the ocean. You literally cannot hurt it. Doesn’t matter how much poison we dump into the ocean. We’ll only kill the things in it. We’ll never kill it. Same with the God-Machine. Kill angels, traitors, stigmatics, cultists, cryptids, whatever, you’ll never hurt the Machine Itself. No, that doesn’t mean we stop trying. You stop trying, you drown. Screw that.

Coming NOW as both PDF and physical book PoD on DTRPG, we reveal The Secret of Vinsen’s Tomb, a Jumpstart adventure for Pugmire. www.drivethrurpg.com/product/232337/The-Secrets-of-Vinsens-Tomb–A-Pugmire-Jumpstart

A cat living in Pugmire disappears, but neither the police dogs nor the cats of the Cat Quarter know why. When zombies attack the heroes, however, all signs point to an invasion by the Monarchies of Mau. But how does this intrigue tie into the lost tomb of the first king of Pugmire?

The Secret of Vinsen’s Tomb is a Pugmire story for three to six characters. This jumpstart contains all the rules and characters you need to play — just grab some dice and go! You can also use this adventure with the full version of Pugmire.

The Secret of Vinsen’s Tomb contains:

• An evocative and mysterious setting that’s both family friendly and deep enough to create compelling stories.

• A summary of Pugmire’s traditional fantasy rules system. It’s designed for streamlined play, with an emphasis on cooperation and action over competition and violence.

• A complete adventure for a Guide to run for three to six players. Also useful for Guides running a full Pugmire game of first or second level characters!

• Six ready-to-play characters, so you can jump into the action.

Can your good dogs discover the secret of Vinsen’s Tomb?

Also available NOW, are two physical PoD spell card packs and PDFs for Pugmire: the Artisans‘ and the Shepherds‘ spells.

In an ancient epoch of forgotten glories, Creation’s greatest artificers forged unimaginable wonders and miracle-machines.

Discover the mystical power of the five magical materials and the secrets of creating your own Evocations. Wield weapons of fabled might and don the armor of mythic heroes, making their puissance your own.  EXALTED_Batch-06_Dragon-blood_02-Half_pa

Well, our big fiery news has to be the white-hot Exalted 3rd Dragon-Blooded: What Fire Has Wrought Kickstarter that has burned up the funding and Stretch Goals with over 1500 backers after just under a week!

This is especially warm news because of all the super-heated work by developers Robert Vance and Eric Minton and their team of blazing-hot writers that has gone into the making of this luminous tome. We know that it was only their burning passion that brought this project from fevered idea to where it could be tempered on the forge of Kickstarter.

Or something like that. We need a real writer on this blog! Stat!

Stepping past the smouldering remains of what passes for wit on this blog, this really has been a fantastic week for our whole EX3 team, and we’re just thrilled that so many backers have taken the chance to check out the first quarter of the Dragon-Blooded: What Fire Has Wrought text that we previewed last Tuesday, and we’re very excited as we anticipate what backers will think about Part 2 when it is revealed tomorrow (as I write this on Monday, the 2nd).

Speaking of today being Monday the 2nd…that means that yesterday was April the First.

Why that means it was April Fools Day! What do you know? I would never have guessed based on the internet, which is known for its subtlety.

Locke_Cavs-236x300.jpg

Cavaliers of Mars art by Vince Locke

On our part, we’ve done all sorts of little stunts and what we hope were fun things on April 1 over the years. Some were funny, some generated a bit of concern until the date was remembered, and some were just little things we thought would provide a wee dram of amusement.

Overall, I’ve tried to avoid the “trick” kind of stunts, as a fair portion of our community hates getting “burned” by those sorts of things. Which really isn’t the relationship we want to have with you guys. Just doing our jobs as best we can can create fiery white-hot moments of rage from some folks,  and I really don’t see any reason to deliberately throw gasoline on those flames.

You thought I was done with the “fire” talk, but I just can’t resist.

What we did this year is a little bit funny, a little bit useful, and a bit of a contest. First, go ahead and check out this piece of art:

War_on_Whitcomb-221x300.jpg

Now this is an image drawn from the working files for They Came From Beneath the Sea! illustrated by the inimitable Larry Blamire, who is also writing on the project and has a fascinating and revealing Wikipedia entry (go ahead and check). Larry has had an amazing and varied career and we’re thrilled to add his multi-talented efforts to They Came From Beneath the Sea!. I mean Trail of the Screaming Forehead. He is so right for this project.

So. On to the April Fools activity for this year.

Monsters from the sea have been sighted on this web site!

In the spirit of the project, as well as a mix of April Fools Day and an Easter egg hunt, there are three places here on the Onyx Path website that contain what we might call “fishy” entries that may or may not wind up in They Came From Beneath the Sea! The first three people to find all three monstrous fish entries and then list them in the comments here on this blog will get a $5 off coupon for DTRPG.com as a little thanks for playing along.

We’ll also be putting up a relatively more serious blog post about They Came From Beneath the Sea! tomorrow, that will give you a clearer, and potentially less fishy-smelling idea of the game.

Finally, please join all of us in wishing developer and editor Dixie Cochran a happy birthday today, and many more as she and her evil cohorts Eddy and Matthew oversee all of our projects. I’m thinking of calling them the Terrible Trio.

Thanks, Dixie and Happy Birthday! With you involved we’re gonna keep making:

Many Worlds, One Path!

Vinsens-Tomb-Cover1-210x300.jpg

Screw that.

Changing-Ways-Cover-232x300.jpg

With a howl of RAGE, the W20 Changing Ways PDF and physical book PoD charges at you now on DTRPG.com! http://www.drivethrurpg.com/product/229183/W20-Changing-Ways

Changing Ways is an in-depth look at what it means to be a werewolf, both on a personal level and as part of a pack. It digs deep into what it feels like to have bones re-knit after breaking, the range of senses available across all forms, and the sudden heady rush of the Gifts and Rites bestowed by spirits. It also provides a look at what life is like for lupus and metis werewolves, characters who have had experiences alien to any person. It shows the many ways that werewolves organize in packs, and how those packs are designed as groups of warriors, rather than aligned to the behavior of wolves.

Changing Ways contains:

• A detailed look at what it means to grow up as a lupus or metis werewolf, and how that colors a character’s perspective.

• More information on what it feels like to be a werewolf, a creature that changes in both body and mind.

• Frameworks and organizations for packs, along with new tactics and systems for forging the pack as part of play.

Mage2elogo-300x117.jpg

Welcome back, increasingly faithful (and patient) readers!

I know, I know. It’s been a while.

Signs of Sorcery is nigh-Developed. It’s 93,000-out-of-97,000 words Developed. That last bit is proving tricky, but our long international nightmare will soon be over and I can get on with things like Tome of the Pentacle or Fallen Worlds.

In response to requests for more, a little something for you.

Aedes and Boons

Oh such a long time ago, when I was describing the changes to Awakening we intended to make it the then-upcoming Second Edition, I wrote one of these blog posts about the Supernal World. We had changed it from being something mages never see but only theorise about (that would be the Supernal Realm) and linked it to our beefed-up Mage Sight: the five Supernal Worlds of Arcadia, Aether, Stygia, Pandemonium, and the Primal Wild are now what mages see when they use their Sight. From the information-gathering spells with extra rules of first edition, Mage Sight now plunged the Awakened into hallucinatory perceptions of the world around them, beset by environments and creatures only they could interact with. Supernal Entities as a thing mages regularly interacted with were only introduced late in first edition, in Summoners — we wanted them to be in the core, and to sometimes appear in reaction to mages using their Sight too deeply.

In short, we wanted Mage Sight to be less “Detect Magic” and more, well… This.

constantine-2-300x125.jpg

A scene from “Constantine” (2005)

Wordcount, though, is a harsh mistress, and we couldn’t get as much into the core about what Mage Sight was like as we wanted. Chapter Two of Awakening mentions things like the quicksilver thorns of Arcadia, shining manifestations of branching timelines as opposed to the more literal brambles of Changeling‘s Hedge (but still sharp, and full of Shrikes). Supernal Entities had the bare bones of their systems included along with Spirits, ghosts, goetia, and Abyssal entities, but they lacked the power and versatility of their presentation in Summoners.

We’d get back to it, we figured, in an appropriate sourcebook.

Like this one, for example!

The excerpt we’re sharing here covers Aedes (Supernal environments like the thorns, that mages of the correct Path using their Sight interact with, while all others are entirely unaffected) and Boons (special abilities for mid- and high- Rank Supernal entities on top of their Arcana.) I have given the core rules and the examples for one Path of each, chosen at random; the Thyrsus Aedes and the Obrimos Boons. Lastly, this excerpt is from the same chapter as the previously-released excerpt about advanced Mage Sight rules. When it talks about Building a Mystery, the Page XX reference is to that, not to the corebook.

The KS page has reviews and how to play links, and as a backer you can download a print’n’play version of your own and start having fun right now! https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/200664283/fetch-quest-a-deck-building-game-in-the-realms-of/description

And once you do, let us know what you think! Card games aren’t our usual thing, so the more feedback we get on the game or the way the Fetch Quest Kickstarter is set up, the better we can do the next ones!

KMJ_Lost-2e-114x300.jpg

Changeling: The Lost 2nd art by Ken Meyer, Jr

Here are a few more bite-sized treats selected from what we talked about in the Monday Meeting today:

  • Our sales partners at IPR‘s sale on prestige edition Chronicles of Darkness books (Demon: The Descent, Mummy: The Curse, Dark Eras, Beast: The Primordial) and their Screens ends June 24th. These are the remaining books from their respective Kickstarters, and are traditional printed and bound, with bookmarks and embossed and varnished covers printed over metallic paper. They’re gorgeous and on sale. http://www.indiepressrevolution.com/xcart/Onyx-Path-Publishing/
  • Fantasy Grounds has added Shelzar: City of Sins from Scarred Lands to their online store, so that their Virtual Tabletop community can now explore the most wicked city in the Scarred Lands. We’re very happy that our SL presence in VTT is starting to build with our friends at Fantasy Grounds!
  • Our plans for Gen Con 2018 are rolling forward – just check out the projects Mirthful Mike is working on right now – and we’re going to be waving at Paizo again on our front, and across the aisle sideways at White Wolf this year. So we’ll have a ring-side seat at the explosion of gamers coming for V5 this year. Meanwhile, we’ll have our good friends from the Wrecking Crew demoing again this year outside the exhibit hall in their own room, and at least one demo table at our booth going at all times. Expect us to announce some pretty wild projects this year!
  • Lots of folks working on lots of exciting books – just peruse the First Draft part of the Progress Report below! We still have some very important core books to deliver, and then a smorgasbord of different projects of all game lines and sizes are on their way.
  • Last Friday’s Onyx Pathcast that featured an overview and behind-the-scenes of Vampire: The Requiem 2nd has garnered a ton of fantastic comments all over the place, and rightfully so considering the Terribly Terrific Trio (or the Terrifically Terrible Trio) were really firing on all cylinders with this one. If you want to hear more of these project or game-line oriented Pathcasts, then join the crowd and let us know! This Friday, at least two thirds of the gang will be interviewing the amazing up-and-coming writer and developer, Steffie de Vaan.

Leblanc_lost-2e-300x227.jpg

Changeling: The Lost 2nd art by Brian LeBlanc

And now, as a change of pace, and as sort of an illustration equivalent to the Developer/Writer viewpoints in last Friday’s Onyx Pathcast, I thought I’d do a bit of a walk-through showing the steps Mirthful Mike and I go through as an art director when one of us commissions an artist to create an illustration for one of our books.

The developer should have provided the art notes for the pieces they know they need. Some devs will write out very detailed, multi-page, descriptions that specify every aspect of what the piece should contain, others will give very brief descriptions and leave the decisions as to what looks good to the artist.

As an art director, I’m looking for a bit of a middle zone where the developer includes descriptions or reference links for accuracy – character appearance, the location, etc – and very specifically what they need to see happen in the illustration. If the point is to show a power being used, we do need to know what that power does. If the point is to show our cool protagonist in a run-down bar, then a brief description of what sort of attitude is being expressed is important.

In the end, we prefer to give the artist just enough info so that they can run with a piece and show off their abilities while still holding to the subject matter we hired them to illustrate. We also like to have a good idea of which pieces are going to which illustrator so that we can fine tune the notes based on how they are most comfortable working.

Some artists like having as much info as possible in addition to the art notes, like the whole text or at least their chapter, while others find all that reading too much to deal with while trying to get to grips with their specific assignments. No wrong answer there, and we try and work with them to allow them to make their best work.

For example, here’s a link to the art notes for the full page pieces for Wraith 20th that we sent to Ken Meyer, Jr. For this project, Ken was illustrating all the full-page pieces and they needed to contain the various player-character types. Since we’ve been hiring Ken for longer than any of us care to be reminded about, RichD was able to keep the info pretty minimal for the actual fulls, while stressing the overall specific feel of Wr20 (as opposed to any of our many other game lines Ken has done his beautiful illustrations for). Here’s a link to those art notes: https://drive.google.com/open?id=0B57iDF62OjtPaV9ySDZ3QlZtbEJqdW8yb2V4ZFVRZDdjRGVZ

Here’s the specific full-page description (in case you don’t want to read the PDF of the full art notes):

Chapter Nine – Drama
Chanteur – Petite wraith with an electric violin and a headset mike, playing the violin like it’s a
weapon. Because it is.

As per our illustration process, Ken then sent in a sketch worked up in pencil and based on a series of emails with Mirthful Mike that went over any questions that Ken might have:

KMJ-Wr20-sketch_chanteur-227x300.jpg

Depending on the project, Mike may loop in the developer, me, or a licensing partner like White Wolf, for commentary and to see if the subject matter is being handled as needed. Most of the time, Mike handles this stage himself – particularly when you consider that different artists sketch with different kinds of completeness. Some artists like to create very tight sketches and then use the final stages to take that tight sketch into the finished medium. Others like to have less detailed sketches and work out the details in their finish.

So an art director gets to know how to “read” the sketches of their different artists and respond appropriately.

In this particular case, the communication worked the way we like it to, because here’s the fantastic final piece:

KMJ-Wr20-chanteur_desat-229x300.jpg

Now figure that we go through those steps, and often have redos or tweaks at each stage, for every piece of art you see in every book and project we make. An art director’s job is never done, especially when they are keeping an eye on all the styles and subject matters we have in all our projects which span:

Many Worlds, One Path!

Boggans-Front-232x300.jpg

This Wednesday the PDF and physical book PoD versions of C20 Kithbook: Boggans go on sale on DTRPG.com!

Sometimes it’s the little things that make the biggest differences in life, and nowhere is this more evident than the boggan kith. Although they have preferred to let others glory in the spotlight, this industrious kith has worked its own subtle and patient magic over the centuries, drawing power from dreams of hearth and comfort and becoming no less than the bedrock of Kithain society. Even heroes need homes to return to, after all.

For the first time ever, the secrets and gossip of the boggan kith are being shared with outsiders. So pull your chair closer to the fire, take up a fresh cup of tea, and listen carefully, because the real truth about these unsung heroes is finally coming to light.

Kithbook: Boggans features:

• A history of this unassuming yet vital kith, and how they’ve subtly shaped the Dreaming.

• Insight into boggan nature combined with advice for bringing boggan characters to life.

• Ready-made characters for quick play, and profiles of famous boggans past and present.

• New Treasures, Merits, and Flaws for boggan characters.

TODAY’S REASON TO CELEBRATE: Today is the birthday of J. Michael Straczynski, 1954 – celebrated writer of comics and TV, specifically of Babylon 5. Fun fact: B5 was a real pioneer in structure for television with free-standing episodes that were part of story-arcs that worked as seasons that had specific season-long stories and finishes, and so it was a huge influence on the limited-series concept for our games. Specifically in pitching Orpheus back in the day, I referenced B5‘s use of structure.

Last month we shared our Vampire The Masquerade fifth edition (V5) pre-alpha playtest at World of Darkness Berlin, with over 100 playtesters from 26 different countries. The reaction was overwhelmingly positive and did not raise any red flags about content or core systems. Last week we released it to the world, and we are grateful for all your survey responses, emails, social media comments, and reviews. Now we are working on the alpha playtest for GenCon 2017, but your feedback on the pre-alpha makes it clear that we need to provide some context for the playtest and for V5.

White Wolf, the World of Darkness, and Vampire: The Masquerade all share a long and proud tradition of exploring contemporary issues through a dark roleplaying lens. Throughout the development of the fifth edition of Vampire (V5), our goals have explicitly included the proud continuation of this tradition, while also supporting an incredibly entertaining roleplaying game experience. We strive to explore difficult and disturbing subjects maturely, but not gratuitously, building on the brave heritage of previous editions.

We don’t plan to abandon this practice, which has been a core part of Vampire for a quarter-century: this is a roleplaying game about monsters.

Make no mistake, the player characters in the V5 pre-alpha playtest are monsters and villains. Through them, we intend for our players to view the Camarilla sect from the Anarch perspective, as a perverse and privileged class of old-school vampires and who adhere to an antiquated code of morality and obsessed by the realpolitik of staying in power at any price. The player characters are written as dictators and collaborators who deserve to fall hard, perhaps even deserve to die, as they are torn from power.

The nature of the Curse makes each sin vampires might inflict upon the world erode their souls. Yet vampires must live off the blood of humans. The longer they exist, the longer they visit their own evil upon the world, they become ever-more distant and alien to the world around them. Their actions have terrible consequences for themselves and others; some of them can be considered truly evil. This internal conflict has been been at the core of VTM stories since the game’s creation. That is the very essence of the Curse of Caine, and it makes the best vampire a struggling anti-hero and the worst a hypocritical monster like Amelina.

Our oversight, for which we apologize, was not providing this context so that our players could see why and how we made these decisions. We needed to clearly state again that the material was intended for mature audiences, and to label it that way. We should have stated again that our vision for V5 brings Vampire back to its roots as a morality tale about evil, set in the darkest places of our own world. Contemporary, real-world horrors and atrocities are an important part of the setting and by extension – its characters.

We’ll communicate this and other design-choices better as we go forward. We can and will make the game’s contents transparent for those who need them to be by giving you fair warning. We want our game’s dark tone to be truly earned, giving it meaning and the opportunity for our players to use it to tell stories of genuinely personal and political horror.

As we release future previews, you’ll see that V5 will include many relevant, timely story elements like the global migrant and refugee crises, drug abuse, human trafficking, urban decay, homelessness, government corruption, ecological crises and political instability. V5 characters will have the opportunity to interact with these topics through scenarios designed to prompt insight and critical thinking, while also being exciting, dramatic, and thrilling, as each Storyteller deems appropriate. Our goal is to allow our players to use these elements to explore tough topics through the lens of roleplaying, to the extent they are interested in exploring such ideas.

Our plan for V5 also includes providing tools and techniques for adjusting the game to personal tastes. There will be techniques to deal with difficult subject matter and strong emotions. We’ll give you the means to focus your V5 chronicles on any aspect of Vampire: The Masquerade that you’ve ever enjoyed, from terrifyingly intimate scenes of very personal horror to the repulsive global power plays of the Camarilla Kindred. You’ll get expert guidance helping you to shine the spotlight on ripped-from-the-headlines realism or insidious parlor politics as you choose.

If you prefer the bloody violence of a street-level drama set against the backdrop of vampire gang warfare and an Anarch Baron’s rise and fall, you can tell that story in V5. You can also join Beckett in his global quest to unravel hidden and forbidden Kindred secrets, or come face to face with the consequences of a modern intelligence community as instruments of government overreach while unraveling the horrifying intrigues of a Camarilla Prince. The V5 stories will scale downward, upward, and sideways as you decide.

Our next live playtest will take place at GenCon 2017 in Indianapolis, and we hope you will join us there, not only to celebrate this convention’s 50th anniversary, but also to participate in the shared creation of a game we all love, and talk about it with us in person. Looking forward to seeing you there.

Blood and Souls,

/ The V5 team

V5 Pre-Alpha QA
We answer some of the most common questions about the V5 Pre-Alpha. Feel free to send us more questions.

Q: Why is Amelina a pedophile?
A: She’s not. She has an obsession with young (recently embraced) Kindred and a feeding restriction that forces her to feed from children and young teens.

Q: Why did you use the term “triggered” to describe someone easily offended on ideological grounds?
A: Because that is the common usage of the term in everyday language, no disrespect intended.

Q: Why are so many characters children (“Club Kids”)?
A: The term Club Kid (at least in Sweden) means a youngish (roughly 18-25) person who spends all their free time at clubs, often under the influence of drugs.

It’s Time!

Put aside the guesswork and feverish speculation: the V5 pre-alpha playtest is here!

Today we are sharing with you the Vampire: The Masquerade 5th Edition (V5) pre-alpha playtest kit, which includes the V5 pre-alpha rules and a special V5 pre-alpha scenario, The Night After. We invite you to download the kit and try it out: invite a few friends to play through the scenario together, talk about it, and then share your opinions with us through the online survey. We appreciate your feedback and value your input.

The Links:

Playtest Kit – https://whitewolf.box.com/v/v5prealphaplaytest

Playtest Survey – https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/v5prealphasurvey

V5 Presentation from WoD Berlin (video) – https://youtu.be/43VXwCS42O0

Please Note:

We will close the survey on 1 August in preparation for the alpha playtest.

We recommend strongly that you play the scenario and not just read the rules document. Actual play is the best way to experience and understand new rules concepts. In fact we suggest that you play it more than once, making different decisions each time to experience the full scope of the rules.

This version of the rules is pre-alpha. That means it’s not feature complete, and the designers have not made final decisions about what rules and features will be included. It was created specifically to test the new Hunger Dice mechanics for a live playtest at the World of Darkness Berlin fan convention in May. Much will change between this version and the Alpha, Beta, and final release versions.

We understand that you may be tempted to use this material to test the rules in ways that aren’t intended (such as trying to reverse-engineer the rules into your own scenarios, or published scenarios). We don’t recommend this: the pre-alpha rules were created specifically for The Night After scenario, and aren’t even close to final. We strongly recommend using them only to play The Night After scenario.

The Night After is a scenario that was designed specifically for these pre-alpha rules. It provides a glimpse into the tumultuous and destructive events that occurred in Berlin in May 2017, as told in Enlightenment in Blood, a VTM LARP event at the WoD Berlin convention. The scenario takes place on the evening immediately after Enlightenment in Blood, but no knowledge of that LARP or its events is necessary to enjoy the playtest.

Trinity Continuum: Aeon art by Marco Mazzoni

Yes, we have zoomed to the stars! The Trinity Continuum: Aeon Kickstarter has funded and six days in we’re actually over 200% funded and we have over 1200 backers!

It is so thrilling to read the response from not only our old Trinity fans, thanks to every one of you for keeping the love alive, but amazingly, we’re seeing tons of backers who are new to Trinity jumping into the KS! Which makes me really glad that Jammin’ James Bell, our Kickstarter Manager, has included a large selection of Trinity first edition PDFs so that new folks can get a taste of all the 1e magic. And that PDF set is growing bigger with Stretch Goal rewards that add more Trinity 1e PDFs.

Yes, a third of our Stretch Goals are for the PDF lovers and newcomers to Trinity. This does not in any way take away from the remaining two thirds of our SGs that add more stuff to our backers’ rewards. You see, Jammin’ James has arranged the SGs so that the added PDFs are at goal amounts that are designed to pop up as a fun thing folks can get between the SG amounts that we have to carefully set.

In other words, if we dropped the added PDF goals, the remaining two thirds of the SGs would not change their funding amounts one bit. It would just seem to take longer to reach them because there wouldn’t be one of the PDF SGs to hit. We do this because we have data that shows that folks tune out of Kickstarters that have long waits between the Stretch Goals. At the end of the day we want folks enjoying this KS and feeling excited that it is going along well, and shorter SGs make that happen better than longer ones.

McDougall_Wr20-300x196.jpg

Wraith 20 art by Larry MacDougall

Remember, like I’ve said a lot over the years here and on KS updates, most of our Stretch Goal amounts aren’t extra money to be thrown at a new section in the AEon AExpansion. Most of the, say, five thousand dollars we need to achieve that goal is from pledges by people who are pledging for physical books. Which is as it should be since getting those traditionally printed physical books printed and in stores is the stated goal of the KS.

But, that means that all those pledge amounts have to subtract out the KS fee and the cost of creating and shipping those physical books. So we are choosing to take the rest, which is a small percentage, and plow that money back into a new cool creation like the new section for the AEon AExpansion. There’s not a lot of “free money” floating around, and, in fact, our data also shows that very few folks will up their pledges just to get to a new Stretch Goal.

Once in a while, particularly for like that last Stretch Goal right at the end of a KS campaign that everybody is afraid won’t be funded, then we see backers adding in a bit without needing an Add-on or whatever as a thing they are justifying adding to their pledge for.

So what I’m saying is, Stretch Goals are for fun and to keep folks engaged with the Kickstarter. They cost us, but we arrange them so that their costs are covered even if that makes for larger goal targets. We do it because we want folks feeling special and enjoying their time spent with our KSs.

This is one of those bits of info I even hesitate to share here in the Monday Meeting Notes blog, but even though it is sad, I think it is important that you folks are aware of these sorts of things.

Last week, long, long time illustrator for White Wolf and Onyx Path, William O’Connor, passed away suddenly at 47.

WoC-Shades-of-Gray-215x300.jpg

I started hiring Bill, or WoC as we called him internally, to do illustrations for the Ars Magica line as things were getting big with Vampire 1st Edition. His professionalism and good nature made it easy to hire him again and again, and his willingness to try new subject matter meant that as WW added new game lines, he could be relied on to create unique and gorgeous illustrations to match those games.

WoC_Ashen-Knight-229x300.jpgWoC-Ashen-Thief-238x300.jpg

For VtM, we got into a visual motif of “put the vampire on a high thing” which you can see here with some examples:

WoC-Constantinople-226x300.jpgWoC-Gehenna-216x300.jpgWoC-Jerusalem-by-Night-217x300.jpg

We also added that whole motif into other game lines:

WoC-Rockies-300x200.jpgWoC-Mage-Poster-239x300.jpgWoC_Las-Vegas-216x300.jpg

When we needed card art, Bill was there, when I wanted to do a tryptic to open each Book of V20, Bill was there. I even talked him into doing behind the scenes blogs for that tryptic, and while he was terrified as to what the fans would say, he was game and the whole exchange between him and the community was fantastic for WW and V20, and I think a lot was learned on both sides.

WoC-Mirror-Image-300x261.jpgWoC-VTES-Scorpions-Touch-300x263.jpg

Most of all, and you can see this in the many testimonials to him online, Bill was a friendly talented guy who loved to share what he knew. He was always learning and then teaching what he learned, as a voice in the TTRPG artistic community, as an art teacher, and as a father to his two little girls. He was an artist who was also someone I called friend, and he will be missed.

WoC-Shadow-Games-215x300.jpg

Last, but in no way the least, I want to let you all know that Rollickin’ Rose Bailey has decided to leave Onyx Path to pursue some pretty great opportunities. I’m sad to lose her as a full-time part of our Onyx Path crew, as she has done so much to help build Onyx these last years all the while keeping an eagle-eye on the quality of our projects, but am happy that she is heading to new amazing adventures.

The sheer depth of her effect on our projects is staggering; everything from her original concepts for Demon, how she pushed forward the overall tone and quality of the 2nd Editions for Chronicles of Darkness, and her absolutely integral work supporting our other devs. I don’t think we would have been able to ramp up our EX3 schedule with our new devs without her providing attention and guidance.

We will definitely miss our Rose. (Even though we’ll all be working on Cavaliers of Mars with her still, and I have a small inkling that her writing will still appear in various Onyx Path books.)

If you want to keep up on her latest projects and throw a little support her way, here is Rose’s Patreon link: https://www.patreon.com/fantasyheartbreaker

But, fear not True Believers!

Dynamic Dixie Cochran has joined us as a full-time freelancer and will be working with our developers for the Chronicles of Darkness and Exalted 3rd game lines, as well as hiring and communicating with our editors. As an editor herself, she has more than a few ideas as to the care of these unsung heroes of publishing.

If you’ve visited our booth at just about any of the conventions we’ve gone to this past year, you’ve probably met the powerhouse that is Dixie. In fact, she probably convinced you to buy a book or three, as well.

One of the developers Dynamic Dixie will be working with is Meghan Fitzgerald, who is going to bring the Changeling: The Lost 2nd main book to fruition. We had already intended that Meghan would then develop the CtL2 line after helping out on the main book with Rose, so we’re just swapping around the focus on who does what. Both Dixie and Rose herself will be backing up Meghan as she finishes up the big book and rolls into the Stretch Goals.

Lots happening here at Onyx Path, and we’re always looking at the best and better ways of creating:

Many Worlds, One Path!

BLURBS!

KICKSTARTER:

Trinity-Continuum-300x101.png

The Trinity Continuum Kickstarter went live January 30 and with almost a week in, we have pledges at 200% of our funding goal, over 1200 backers, and we’ve gone through six Stretch Goals including VARGs and Aberrants and their cults that will be added to the AEon AExpansion, and a scenario called “Caper, Incorporated” has been added to the In Media Res scenario collection PDF for the Trinity Continuum Core.

Trinity Continuum: Aeon, is our reboot of the classic Trinity (Aeon) game, and Trinity Continuum: Core is the core book that all of our Trinity Continuum game lines will spin off from. Both books will be a part of this Kickstarter and backers have already received the first two quarters of the Trinity Continuum: Core text, with more to come. James Bell, our Kickstarter Manager, has been keeping this KS hopping, so we hope you’ll check it out!

Our next Kickstarter is slated to be EX3‘s Dragon-Blooded.

As we try and find ways to enable our community to more easily play our games, the Onyx Dice Rolling App is now live! Our dev team has been doing updates since we launched based on the excellent use-case comments by our community, and this thing is both rolling and rocking!

Today the devs are adding a whole bunch of new game lines’ dice and rolling bg’s, so be sure to update your app!

There’s been tweaks to all elements of the UI, you can now preview every die type in the store, and you can use multiple die types per roll! Here are the links for the Apple and Android versions:

Vinsens-Tomb-Cover1-210x300.jpg

Coming this Wednesday as an Advance PDF on DTRPG, we reveal The Secret of Vinsen’s Tomb, a Jumpstart adventure for Pugmire. (And yes, there will be a physical book PoD version coming soon).

Huntsmen-cover-200x300.jpg

Is a life of running and hiding a life worth living? We say yes. There’s always something between the running and the hiding, and those moments of grace make it all worthwhile.

The Huntsmen Chronicle Anthology is a perfect companion piece to Changeling: The Lost, 2nd Edition. These stories spin tales of the Lost, of those abducted and enslaved by fairies. Those who escaped, but whose captors will stop at nothing to find them. These fairies summon forth the Huntsmen, primordial hunters who understand nothing but pursuit and capture. The Huntsmen are unstoppable monsters, and the Lost can only look to each other for respite, rare comfort, and rarer trust.

The Hedge has parted and you can get the PDF/electronic versions and the physical book PoD version of The Huntsmen Chronicle Fiction Anthology for Changeling: The Lost 2nd Edition at DTRPG.com! http://www.drivethrurpg.com/product/210042/The-Huntsmen-Chronicle-Anthology

Becketts-Jyhad-Diary-Front-Cover-210x300

At last, one of the most legendary of Kindred will share his personal journal with you! V20 Beckett’s Jyhad Diary goes on sale in PDF and PoD versions on DTRPG.com! http://www.drivethrurpg.com/product/225322/V20-Becketts-Jyhad-Diary

It’s ever been a loaded word among vampires. Jyhad is in force everywhere from lofty, perfumed Elysium to cloying, smoke-filled blood feasts. Jyhad’s the eternal game played by elders, Methuselahs, and worse — it’s the agenda of beings so utterly beyond humanity, one such as yourself could scarcely understand its movements.

Luckily for you, you’ve picked up a copy of my diary. With my help you may just take a step on the first rung of understanding. Information worth having is information you must earn through blood, and oh, how I’ve bled for what’s contained within these pages.

— Beckett

Beckett’s Jyhad Diary serves as the definitive book of setting and plot for Vampire: The Masquerade, containing 30 chapters spanning different geographical regions, encountering vampires of every clan, profiling obscure and profound segments of the mythology, and providing countless story hooks on every page.

Masterfully written by the likes of Neall Raemonn Price, Joshua Alan Doetsch, Myranda Sarro, Steffie de Vaan, Malcolm Sheppard, Alan Alexander, Renee Knipe, and Matthew Dawkins, Beckett’s Jyhad Diary is as fascinating to read as to use for your game Chronicles.

Changing-Ways-Cover-232x300.jpg

With a howl of RAGE, the W20 Changing Ways Advance PDF charges at you this Wednesday on DTRPG.com!

A Land Where Legends Walk

Drawing enthusiastically on Greek mythology, the revised and re-imagined Scarred Lands nonetheless retains its place as a modern fantasy RPG setting. This is a world shaped by gods and monsters, and only the greatest of heroes can expect to be counted among them. The most populous continent of Scarn, Ghelspad, plays host to vast unexplored regions, hides unsolved riddles from ancient cultures, and taunts adventures with the promise of undiscovered riches hidden among the ruins of older civilizations.

Yet the myths of the Scarred Lands are relatively recent events. The effects of the Titanswar still ripple through the world, and the heroines and villains of many of these stories are part of living memory, if not still living.

The Award-Winning Fantasy Setting Returns

Scarred Lands has been a favorite fantasy setting since the release of the Creature Collection for the d20 System in 2000. In subsequent years, over 40 titles were published for Scarred Lands, making it one of the most fully supported fantasy RPG settings ever and the premiere product line of Sword & Sorcery Studios.

Available in both 5th Edition and Pathfinder compatible versions! PDF and PoD formats available NOW!

TODAY’S REASON TO CELEBRATE: The Eagles win the Superbowl! The Eagles win the Superbowl! The Eagles win the Superbowl!

Mortekai

…And back the Kickstarter!

Video-Splash-300x169.jpg

Using the classic Aeon Trinity motto: Hope, Sacrifice, Unity!

Reason #1: HOPE

We’re not talking about a shiny-happy ending to every game here, but that one of the base precepts of the Continuum is that efforts produce results. It’s a continuum of settings with some of them being very dark indeed, and others much more about heroic actions delivering heroic and positive results. And then, of course, you can decide at your table how far to take things beyond how we present them.

Your group of players may decide to shoot Otha Herzog in the head and put an end to his visions of the future – possibly leaving Earth with no fore-warning of dire events, while another table might be working with ISRA to arrive at the right time and the right place with the right equipment. That’s not just an external thing players do, but it’s built in to the Trinity Continuum to allow those choices and for those settings to exist with all the other ones in the Continuum.

This, to me, is what Hope means in the Trinity Continuum, a chance that in the nigh-infinite universes that could exist in the Continuum, human potential can reach untold heights and forge a new future.

On a Kickstarter level, we have hope that this KS is indicative of the interest that folks have towards not just these first two books, the Trinity Continuum Core book and the Trinity Continuum: Aeon book and all the additional projects we can do with them, but also for the additional settings we could do next. Both the two known ones, Aberrant and Adventure!, and also the many, many additional settings that can be part of the Continuum.

Reason #2: SACRIFICE

Again, your acts have consequences in the Trinity Continuum, and while it is set up as mentioned above to provide results when those actions are taken, sometimes those results have a cost. Which makes sense since we want all of the Trinity Continuum settings to allow dramatic resolutions no matter how light or dark they are.

Beyond the setting depth that Sacrifice adds, we also have game play systems within the Storypath System that function by the players using, and even encouraging, the bad things that happen to them so that they gain bonuses or advantages to further the storyline. This can be very meta-mechanical, or very story-based, or somewhere in between, but the important thing is that there are opportunities for meaningful game play even when you fail a roll.

On a Kickstarter level, a lot of folks, including some of the devs, have had to sacrifice a fair bit of patience waiting for their favorite game to come back. But since what we really don’t want are folks sacrificing cash, good will, or their excitement for the return of the Trinity Universe with our Trinity Continuum reboot during this Kickstarter campaign, we made sure that the sacrifice of time and effort was ours before the KS was good to go.

Which means that even though it took time to create what we wanted, we now have a fantastic and flexible game system that powers all of the possible Trinity Continuum settings, and both the Trinity Continuum Core and the Trinity Continuum: Aeon books are essentially done.  Don’t worry, we’ll use backer feedback to polish, tweak a few areas, and clarify a few things, but the heavy lifting earlier has paid off now and the books should easily beat the “estimated delivery” KS dates.

(He says knocking on all the wood in the house, gluing broken mirrors back together, and throwing whole shakers of salt over both shoulders just in case.)

Trabbold_BeastPG-232x300.jpg

Beast Players Guide art by Andrew Trabbold

Reason #3: UNITY

In the Trinity Continuum, there are a ton of characters that could easily be described as a lone-wolf, as a one-person army, as a force of one. Yet, when they work with other characters, the whole is so much greater than the sum of the parts. The organizations, from two-person team-ups to international Agencies or Orders, exist in the setting itself, not just to codify the player characters. Particularly in the Trinity Continuum: Aeon setting, they are absolutely needed to enable mankind to face the challenges of rebuilding after the Aberrant War and taking up the exploration of the universe.

Our rules reflect this as well, from how Psion powers work all the way to the Initiative system encouraging party teamwork and strategy.

On a meta-level, the Trinity Continuum may well also be greater than any individual setting within it, but regardless of whether that is how folks see it, the Continuum is designed so that no matter what happens in any given setting it remains a part of the Continuum.

The example we use in talking this over is including the City of Super-Scientific Gorillas as part of Adventure! Something excellently pulp-y like that, somewhere in the jungles or in the hollow Earth, sounds fantastic. But how would that fit into a modern day Trinity Continuum Core story? It wouldn’t have to. There might be clues that something like that once existed, but now that whole place exists essentially “out of phase” with the modern day. You could get there. but a commercial airline flying over isn’t going to see it.

This also means that no individual table’s storyline is going to contradict the history and events presented in any setting published by Onyx Path. All worlds are true and can fit in the Trinity Continuum.

On a Kickstarter level, we tried to set up the KS rewards and stretch goals to give value to backers no matter whether they are new to Trinity or fans of the Trinity Universe already. Whether they did their gaming with PDFs or with printed books. Whether they loved the original Trinity(Aeon) setting, or were fans of Aberrant or Adventure! far more than our science fiction game.

It should be said, and I think our KS Manager Jumpin’ James Bell has already touched on this, that the Trinity Continuum Core is going to be needed to run Trinity Continuum: Aberrant and Trinity Continuum: Adventure!, so even if you’re waiting for them, now is the time to come together in Unity with your fellow Trinity fans and pledge to get the TC Core book to help this KS strive for greater goals.

We hope for, and really need, a Unity of our community behind this Kickstarter and are thrilled to see how much there already is. I mention this below, but seriously, now is the time to get the word out! With only a few days to go, let’s drive this mighty ship forward with our mental energies (for Psion powers, we have the internet) and tell everyone you once knew who enjoyed the first iteration that there’s a new and exciting version that they can get in on!

And with that, I think it should be obvious how apt our tagline is:

BLURBS!

KICKSTARTER:

Trinity-Continuum-300x101.png

The Trinity Continuum Kickstarter is roaring towards the finish line on Thursday in a psychokinetic burst of energy! And yet, there are still a lot of fans of the original releases out there who aren’t connected to our current incarnation, so please, if you know a fan from back in the day: LET THEM KNOW THIS KS IS HAPPENING!

So far, we’ve passed 300% of our funding goal, over 1600 backers, and we’ve gone through sixteen Stretch Goals including VARGs, new Noetic Biotech, new Cyberware, new Espionage-Related Hardtech, and Aberrants and their cults, and a section on how to play Psions in the modern day core rulebook setting will be added to the AEon AExpansion, a Trinity Continuum: Aeon novella entitled “Dawn“, a scenario called “Caper, Incorporated” has been added to the In Media Res scenario collection PDF for the Trinity Continuum Core, and backers will be able to download the Trinity Core Dice for the Onyx Dice Rolling App.

We’ve also now grown the bundle of first edition PDFs to 15 and with the $15 buy-in that means backers get this bundle for $1 per PDF!

https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/200664283/trinity-continuum-aeon-rpg

Trinity Continuum: Aeon, is our reboot of the classic Trinity (Aeon) game, and Trinity Continuum: Core is the core book that all of our Trinity Continuum game lines will spin off from. Both books will be a part of this Kickstarter and backers have already received the first two quarters of the Trinity Continuum: Core text, with more to come. James Bell, our Kickstarter Manager, has been keeping this KS hopping, so we hope you’ll check it out!

Our next Kickstarter is slated to be EX3‘s Dragon-Blooded.

onyx_dice-300x146.png

As we try and find ways to enable our community to more easily play our games, the Onyx Dice Rolling App is now live! Our dev team has been doing updates since we launched based on the excellent use-case comments by our community, and this thing is both rolling and rocking!

Last week the devs are added a whole bunch of new game lines’ dice and rolling bg’s and got caught by a bug Apple needed to fix, so be sure to update your app and soon that should be fixed.

There’s been tweaks to all elements of the UI, you can now preview every die type in the store, and you can use multiple die types per roll! Here are the links for the Apple and Android versions:

Changing-Ways-Cover-232x300.jpg

With a howl of RAGE, the W20 Changing Ways PDF and physical book PoD charges at you this Wednesday on DTRPG.com! http://www.drivethrurpg.com/product/229183/W20-Changing-Ways

Vinsens-Tomb-Cover1-210x300.jpg

Coming this Wednesday as an Advance PDF on DTRPG, we reveal The Secret of Vinsen’s Tomb, a Jumpstart adventure for Pugmire. (And yes, there will be a physical book PoD version coming soon). www.drivethrurpg.com/product/232337/The-Secrets-of-Vinsens-Tomb–A-Pugmire-Jumpstart

SLPG-5e-232x300.jpgSLPG-PF-232x300.jpg

TODAY’S REASON TO CELEBRATE: It’s George Harrison’s birthday today, and while he is in fact now dead, we’re sure glad he was around to add his creative magic to the Traveling Wilbury‘s and some other, less important, earlier musical group that did a couple of records back when music was only available as records.

Long time readers of this blog might have noticed that we, or the tabletop RPG business as a whole, often have incidents occur during the course of a year that flare up on social media for one reason or the other that Onyx Path doesn’t really officially comment on. This isn’t an accident, as I don’t think a lot is gained by verbally sparring in social media while we have games and books that need to be created and made available to all of you folks.

This can be frustrating. I mean really, really, head is going to explode, frustrating. Particularly when ourselves or our friends are being attacked online.

But here is a statement I _do_ need to make officially, although I never thought it would have been necessary. It, in fact, squicks me out to think that the world needs to hear this, but since a whole bunch of folks have indicated that they’d feel a lot better if I said it, there you go:

Onyx Path is against Nazis. We do not support Nazis, and if you are reading this and self-identify as a Nazi, we don’t make these games for you. Don’t buy them, or steal them, or read them, or play them.

Simplistic and low-hanging fruit, maybe, but this is something I thought was painfully obvious about us. Yet, clearly it was not. Hence this statement, made in all seriousness to hopefully end any confusion, and starting us out today so that you, our loyal readers, know where we stand first.

And now we’ll get back to our usual mix of hi-jinks and project info.

Which brings us to: the dead!

The Geist: The Sin-Eaters 2nd Edition Kickstarter funded in less than a day last week, and now is smashing through Stretch Goals. Like a lot of our latest Kickstarters, we have the full text of the Geist 2e core book that we’re revealing to backers during the course of the month, and the Stretch Goals are for additional projects like a Companion or Ready Made Characters.

Both approaches are designed so that the production and release of the Geist 2e book is not delayed by finishing writing or adding writing to the book. Which has extended our production time on previous projects by far more than we wanted or planned for. We’ve been thrilled by everyone’s response to this Kickstarter so far, so if you haven’t had a chance but like engaging with a very positive and energized community of backers, please pop over.

And just to add another bit about the dead from a different gameline: Wraith: The Oblivion 20th PoD files are away at DTRPG, and we’ll be putting the intro booklet for Wr20, the Handbook for the Recently Deceased, on sale this Wednesday also at DTRPG.

Getting these projects to these stages is incredibly satisfying, as the Wraith 20th Kickstarter is one of the ones that taught us a lesson about having the finished text in hand since getting the book written was another unexpected ordeal.

Last Friday’s Onyx Pathcast was an interview with the multi-talented developer and writer Danielle Lauzon, and besides the very enjoyable interview itself, I think the various tales of life as a TTRPG freelancer (especially when listened to after the Pathcast the week before about freelancing in general) and Danielle’s experiences with other companies and developing Vampire: The Requiem 2e and 7th Sea projects concurrently, is an accurate and fascinating peek into the way our projects are created.

To stress the point, perhaps unnecessarily, most of our projects are created by freelance contract writers, developers, editors, artists, etc. That creates a very different working environment and challenges than the old school RPG company in a building with everyone on-staff and down the hall from each other. We’re continually trying to find better ways to do it and to keep our creators sane (ish) while we all work from offices in different parts of the world.

This Friday on the Onyx Pathcast, Eddy, Matthew, and Dixie will be talking about two Realms of Pugmire projects and the different challenges and levels of experimentation that went into them: it’s “Dissecting Pan’s Guide and Monarchies of Mau“.

Hope you all can take some time and listen, and remember: they’re talking about…

Many Worlds, One Path!

BLURBS!

KICKSTARTER:

Background-Geist-300x169.jpg

The Geist: The Sin-Eaters 2nd Edition Kickstarter began a week ago and has funded and passed several Stretch Goals to build a companion book, the Memento Mori, as I write this. We want to be able to make a great looking hardcover edition, and get that into stores while giving backers first look at the complete text and other fun benefits: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/200664283/geist-the-sin-eaters-2nd-edition

Geist: The Sin-Eaters 2nd Edition includes all the rules you need to play as one of the Bound: Five Burdens reflecting the cause that pulled you back from the grave, five krewe Archetypes for building your own mystery religion, and the Haunts, Keys, and Ceremonies that provide the Bound with their macabre powers.

It also includes the Chronicle of the Dead, featuring the Sin-Eaters’ struggle against the all-consuming Underworld and a variety of terrifying threats. In addition, for the first time in the Chronicles of Darkness line, ghosts are presented as playable characters.

Chapters include:

  • The Quick and the Dead: the five Burdens (the reason a Sin-Eater comes back from the dead and what draws a particular geist to them) and krewe Archetypes (the common cause that draws a krewe of Sin-Eaters together).
  • The Road Back: On death and coming back, and why Bound make the Bargain, including possible consequences.
  • One Foot in the Grave: Character creation, with sections on both geist and krewe creation, Anchors, Merits, Synergy, Plasm, Abilities, Haunts, Keys, Ceremonies, and Mementos.
  • Old Laws: the core Chronicles of Darkness rules, with special rules for playing Sin-Eaters, as well as information on subsystems for krewes, ghosts, and the Underworld, including Avernian Gates.
  • Antagonists: villains for your Geist chronicle, including Reapers, Eaters of the Dead, necromancers, enemy Bound, and Kerberoi.
  • The Quiet Places: Setting information and story hooks for playing your Geist chronicle in specific times and places in history., from 16th-century Brazil to modern-day Edinburgh, Scotland to Mobile, Alabama in 1910, as well as information on Dominions.
  • Ghost Stories: Storyteller advice and information for running a Geist chronicle, including designing Remembrances, how to set theme and mood, story seeds, and various ways to play out the end of a game.
  • Appendix: The Absent: This Appendix details the Absent, playable ghosts, including Memories, new Merits, and a collection of possible ghost characters to expand on and use in your chronicle.
  • Appendix: Conditions and Tilts: Geist-specific Conditions and Tilts, including ephemeral Influence Conditions and Manifestation Conditions for ghosts, as well as Haunt Conditions and Tilts.

Handbook for the Recently Deceased includes:

• Chronicle ideas for campaigns featuring new wraiths — and new players.

• Advice on handling first Catharsis and first Harrowings.

James-Mosingo_Base-Jump-300x169.jpgThe Trinity Continuum is designed to handle a lot in the action-adventure/sci-fi umbrella, and we want to provide you the tools you need to run the kind of game you and your friends enjoy best. Here’s a section on genre from Chapter Five: The Storyguide in the Trinity Continuum Core Rulebook.

While the Trinity Continuum universe encompasses a wide variety of stories, that doesn’t mean every group finds every type of story equally appealing, or that all those styles naturally mesh well together. That’s where genre understanding becomes important, because while the umbrella of science fiction covers the Trinity Continuum, there are a lot of possible subgenres that suit different playstyles and present the world in a different light.

Before the group sits down to play, it’s a good idea to talk about exactly what style of story the players want. This doesn’t mean giving away specific plot twists, of course, but rather having a discussion of what the group is expecting. Think of it like a pitch discussion for a series pilot, where the creators identify important concepts and themes before settling down to the nitty gritty of characters and plot. Doing so not only helps the Storyguide craft a fun and engaging tale for everyone, but also ensures that the players are on the same page regarding what the game is going to be like in the broad strokes.

After all, if half of the group is expecting a realistic, hard sci-fi game full of cutting-edge, but believable technology and the other half of the group wants technobabble and outlandish gadgets that do the impossible in the guise of “science,” there’s going to be frustration down the line as their expectations collide. If the group is far apart, then it’s time to talk compromise and see what everyone is willing to accept to tell fun, engaging stories together. It’s not usually difficult to reach these sorts of accommodations, but first the group must be aware that they’re necessary, and that’s a lot easier to discuss up front rather than in the middle of a future session.

In the previous example, for instance, the group might decide that soft science fiction is a good middle ground. The group’s hard science-fiction fans accept that not everything will be nuts-and-bolts realistic, while the weird-science fans agree to tone down the more fantastic end of their desired technology level. Whatever works for the group is fine, so long as everyone is willing to work it out and get on board.

With that in mind, what follows are discussions of the three major genres found in the Trinity Continuum — high tech, science fiction, and weird science — as well as shorter discussions of other genres and subgenres that are not necessarily covered by default but could be adapted to work in this setting. Each discussion provides some insight into what makes that genre work, as well as advice for evoking it in play; with an eye toward designing games that showcase its best features, while avoiding some of its difficult aspects.

High Tech

As what might be considered the default setting for the Trinity Continuum, it’s important to understand that high tech stories, while sharing some elements of science fiction, are still distinct in what they focus on. Not surprisingly, high tech stories use the gear and gadgets to enable characters to perform amazing feats — they are important to the story, but are still fundamentally tools to help the characters achieve their goals. This contrasts with science fiction, where the science serves as the focus of the story and the actions of the characters. At its heart, high tech is the action-adventure genre with a special focus on a lot of cool toys, as compared to the more philosophical bent of science fiction, and so it shines when it features a lot of great stunts, interesting locations, and intricate action set pieces.

Examples: Leverage, James Bond stories, Person of Interest, Ghost Recon series by Tom Clancy.

Science Fiction

Although high tech and its action-adventure feel may be the default setting of Trinity Continuum, the setting also naturally lends itself to different kinds of science fiction. At first glance the two genres may seem difficult to tell apart, but when you take away the toys and trappings, what separates them is that high tech is about personal skill and achievement, while science fiction uses science to raise questions about humanity and its relationship with the universe. This is not to say that science fiction can’t also include action sequences, intrigue, romance, or any number of other plot elements, of course — simply that it places one or more scientific theories and their implications at the heart of a story, so that removing them is impossible without fundamentally rewriting the story. That deep connection to science and the questions it raises is what defines this genre.

Examples: Star Trek, Black Mirror, Battlestar Galactica, Westworld, Arrival, and Infinite Vacation.

Weird Science

While nominally based on science rather than supernatural forces to explain its fantastic theories and devices, weird science might as well dress an elven wizard in a lab coat and safety goggles, for all the attention it pays to how science actually works. Which is not to say it can’t be fun, or the basis for an excellent game, but it does require acknowledging some very fundamental differences from the high-tech and science-fiction genres. This is science as a hot rod with chrome fins, neon stripes, some cool tunes blaring on the radio, and an improbable number of jet engines strapped to the back. In many ways, it is science presented in the way that many people, and even some scientists, wish it worked, rather than how it actually works.

Examples: Fringe, The X-Files, Stargate, Limitless, Eureka

The Trinity Continuum Core Rulebook and Trinity Continuum: Æon are currently available for preorder via BackerKit.

64033.jpgGot the latest Geist update from Travis:

The Bound are not merely people possessed by the dead. A Sin-Eater’s geist is a conduit through which she can draw on the power of the Underworld itself. She unleashes tendrils of Plasm that take physical form as bleeding walls, flying knives, and skeletal apparitions. She lays deadly curses, draws her geist into her flesh to transform her body, or infuses her voice with the keening wails of the dead.

All Haunts draw their power from the Underworld, the Sin-Eater (or her geist) weaving Plasm into a form that befits the Haunt, whether that’s invisible strings that fling objects around a room or black-iron talons wrapped around her fingers. As she advances her understanding of a Haunt, she discovers novel new ways to weave Plasm into the Haunt’s effects, and as her raw ability to store and channel Plasm increases, she gains the ability to sling powerful Haunts at a moment’s notice.

Haunts

For Geist Second Edition, we’ve kept the seven Haunts from the first edition core rulebook (back when they were called Manifestations), but we’ve added three new ones to allow each Burden to have a signature power:

  • The Boneyard is the classic “haunted house” power: By suffusing an area with Plasm, the Bound gains a perfect awareness of the area and the ability to create minor poltergeist-like effects. At higher levels, she can project her senses to anywhere within the area, trap people inside the Boneyard, or even warp the environment to fit her whim.
  • The Caul allows the Sin-Eater to suffuse her body with Plasm, becoming a protean horror of malleable flesh. She can twist her visage into a nightmarish form, bud off a horde of weird homunculi, or even consume the recently-dead to take their shape.
  • The Curse expresses the displeasure of the dead, hexing her victim with bad luck. At higher levels she can turn technology against the victim, wither his limbs, or give him a brief glimpse of what it’s like to be a ghost, forgotten and invisible.
  • The Dirge is a haunting, wordless melody that plucks at the heartstrings of the living and the dead alike. It can mesmerize those who hear it, heal or inflict madness, and even call forth the dead into the living world.
  • The Marionette gives the Sin-Eater the ability to reach out with tendrils of Plasm and manipulate objects at a distance. At higher levels she gains greater control, terrible strength, and even the ability to trap her targets in a prison of their own flesh (or Corpus) that dances to her tune.
  • The Memoria is the Haunt of memory, calling up events buried and forgotten. At the basic level, the Bound can experience the memory herself; at higher levels she can manifest it as a phantasmal image, bring others into the memory, and ultimately change the memory, breaking cycles of abuse and granting closure to those traumatized by the past.
  • The Oracle flings the Bound’s shade into the Underworld to seek forbidden knowledge and lost secrets. And all it takes is for her to die. Again.
  • The Rage is, as its name suggests, the fury of the grave unleashed. It is rending claws, a scream that strikes its listeners blind, a wrath that cracks open the world.
  • The Shroud wraps the Sin-Eater in her geist, pulling her briefly into Twilight. At higher levels, she becomes preternaturally ghost-like even while not in Twilight, and learns to slip between the world of the living and the Underworld with equal facility.
  • The Tomb is the Haunt of things lost to time, of grave goods and the symbolic meaning of the grave. It allows her to make whole what was destroyed, spinning wrecked hot rods or dead loved ones from shells of Plasm. At higher levels they can invite ghosts into the replicas they create, imbue their creations with weird powers, and even spin reality out of symbolic representations, creating Staff out of wax ushabti figurines or Resources out of joss paper Hell Money.

Mechanics

Haunts are rated from one to five dots, but the power progression works a little differently than, say, Vampire’s Disciplines or Mage’s Arcana. The first dot of every Haunt is the only one that has an activation roll, and it creates the basic effect of the Haunt in the form of a Condition (or, sometimes, a Tilt). Higher dot levels allow the character to spend additional Plasm to add effects to the Haunt or improve the efficiency of the Plasm spent on the base power. With a rare few exceptions, most Haunt levels add a single, significant option, so you won’t be faced with the choice paralysis of having a huge menu of potential effects.

For example, the first-dot power of the Boneyard allows the Sin-Eater to haunt an area ranging from a few rooms up to a large warehouse, depending on how much Plasm she spends. The second dot lets her spend Plasm to remote-view from anywhere within the Boneyard, while the third dot increases the base area of the Boneyard and also lets her spend Plasm to inflict a penalty on any attempts to escape the Boneyard.

Oh, and that initial Condition? It resolves if someone throws your geist’s ban or bane at you. So keep that information secret.

The net result of this is a system that makes your Plasm reserves and Plasm per Turn a significant part of power use — a low Synergy Sin-Eater has to allot more time to create her Haunts, or find creative ways to acquire more Plasm. Higher-Synergy characters can throw around lots of Plasm per turn and create some truly terrifying effects at a moment’s notice.

Keys

The gates of the Underworld are locked. Everyone knows that. They open only to admit the shades of the dead — but over the millenia, common motifs wear grooves in the fabric of death itself. Every bloody-handed murder, every plague, every senseless accident that snatches away a life, leaves an impression on the land of the dead. It’s a process not unlike taking a wax impression of a lock, but in reverse: instead of the tumblers imprinting on the soft wax of the key, the Key shapes the lock to fit itself.

While anyone with the proper knowledge can use these Keys to open Avernian Gates (p. XX), the Bound, standing as they do on the borders between the land of the living and the land of the dead, are themselves doors to the Underworld. Unlocking themselves yields a rush of power and Plasm. That power doesn’t come free: each Key bears a Doom that afflicts those who call on its power. If there’s an argument for the active, thinking malevolence of the Underworld, it may well be these.

For Geist Second Edition, we’ve trimmed the list of Keys down to nine: one for each Attribute. Your character starts with one innate Key tied to their own death and a second tied to their geist’s. To get more Keys, you’ll need to collect Mementos — or practice ectophagia on some other geist.

  • The Key of Beasts (The Primeval Key, the Key of Tooth and Claw, the Key of Verdant Savagery) – Wits
  • The Key of Blood (The Stigmatic Key, the Key of Veils and Shades, the Key of Crimson Agony) – Presence
  • The Key of Chance (The Bastard’s Key, the Key of Jinx and Hex, the Key of Black Humor) – Dexterity
  • The Key of Cold Wind (The Breathless Key, the Key of Gale and Garrote, the Key of Ivory Sorrow) – Resolve
  • The Key of Deep Waters (The Tear-Stained Key, the Key of Wave and Whirlpool, the Key of Azure Grief) – Manipulation
  • The Key of Disease (The Wasting Key, the Key of Plague and Pestilence, the Key of Bilious Despair) – Stamina
  • The Key of Grave Dirt (The Crushing Key, the Key of Stone and Barrow, the Key of Slate Futility) – Strength
  • The Key of Pyre Flame (The Burning Key, the Key of Ash and Brand, the Key of Golden Annihilation) – Intelligence
  • The Key of Stillness (The Silent Key, the Key of Shroud and Shadow, the Key of Jet Deception) – Composure

(The sharp-eyed among you might notice that two of the Keys from first edition are gone, and have been replaced by the no-longer-used Thresholds. The Phantasmal and Passion Keys were cut because there are now entire Haunts dealing with illusions and emotions, while the Industrial Key didn’t really fit thematically.)

Mechanics

Remember before where we said that Sin-Eaters need to find creative ways to get more Plasm? Keys are the main one of those. You can unlock any Haunt with any Key (or even with none at all), but you get more out of it if you use a Key that’s thematically relevant.

So what do Keys do? First, they give you a kicker of free Plasm — a number equal to the Key’s Unlock Attribute. This Plasm ignores the normal per-turn limit, so by using a Key, even a low-Synergy character can throw out a big effect. (If you need Plasm for something that isn’t a Haunt, you can use a Key just for the free Plasm — but you still suffer its Doom.)

Second, they let you add the Key’s Attribute rating to the activation roll for a Haunt. Finally, if you use them in a situation that’s resonant with the Key — using the Key of Chance when something you love is on the line, or using the Key of Stillness on an unaware or helpless target — you earn an exceptional success on three successes instead of five.

Of course, there’s a cost associated with all this goodness. Isn’t there always? Once you’ve used a Key, you fall under the effects of its Doom. While you’re Doomed, you can’t use that Key from that source again until the Doom is triggered. The Doom of Blood, for instance, makes you fail dramatically the next time you try to avoid a violent confrontation, whether by de-escalating, running, or what have you. (This, incidentally, is why it’s useful to keep a large collection of Mementos handy. While you’re under the Doom of Stillness from your own innate Key, you can still use the Key of Stillness from the Cold Harbor Diary, for example.)

Next Time

It seems logical to go from the main supernatural powers of the Bound to their supporting abilities. So next time, will we learn about Ceremonies or Mementos?

Here’s the latest blog post from Geist developer Travis:

(First of all, I’d like to apologize for the lack of blog posts the last couple of weeks — the whole family was down with a nasty flu. Get your flu shots, people!)

Last time, I asked you to vote between hearing about Reapers or ghosts. Here’s where I confess that that wasn’t entirely a fair question: Reapers, you see, are ghosts. Not chthonic monsters, not inhuman enforcers of the Underworld’s will. Just ghosts.

Just people.

Taking Up the Scythe

So if Reapers are just ghosts, what makes a Reaper? They’d tell you it’s the favor of the Chthonic Gods. They’d tell you they were chosen, marked for greatness, given a holy mission by the never-born lords and ladies of the Underworld. Others would say it’s a craven desire to come out on top no matter the cost, “fuck you, got mine” on a cosmic scale.

Wherever you fall on that spectrum, the fact remains that some ghosts (usually those with plenty of Essence to keep dissolution at bay) don’t see a problem with the state of the afterlife. Would they prefer to be alive? Sure, but if wishes were horses then beggars would ride. Some remember the pain of being so close to the living world but never able to touch it, and think a clean break is the only way to heal. Others were hounded by the unquiet dead in life, and want to enforce the separation of the world of the living and the world of the dead. Still others are simply convinced that there must be a reason for the way things are, and tampering with it is an act of monumental hubris.

A lot of those ghosts become cult leaders, preaching the doctrine of the Chthonic Gods in the River Cities, the Dominions, and itinerant camps throughout the Underworld. Sometimes that’s as far as it goes. But other times, one of these preacher shades finds a mask — buried in the loose soil of a forgotten tunnel, caught up on the banks of a River, or resting on an altar of bone and chalcedony in a temple that wasn’t there yesterday and won’t be there again tomorrow. Those who take up the masks, who wear them in veneration of the Gods Below, are the Reapers.

Beware of Ghosts Bearing Masks

It’s a curious phrase, isn’t it? Ghosts bearing masks. Not wearing them. That’s because, by the time a Reaper has donned her Deathmask, it’s probably too late. The mask provides power, yes, and the freedom to hunt beyond the gates of the Underworld, but more than that, it provides clarity of purpose. A Reaper wearing a Deathmask is stripped to the core of herself, complexity and humanity sandblasted down to a single tenet: the dead belong below. Her Corpus warps into a terrible, inhuman form as it swells to contain the power of the mask. Even without having drunk from one of the Rivers, she becomes the equal of even the most powerful geist. She bursts forth from the Underworld, unhindered by Avernian Gates or the need to stay near Anchors, and stalks her prey, swallowing them whole only to vomit them back up once safely returned to the Underworld. She is the stuff of ghosts’ nightmares, the bogeyman whispered of over Twilight campfires and after krewe religious services.

More dangerous are the Reapers who hunt smarter, not harder. Why hunt down individual ghosts at all when you can slip into a graveyard community looking like any other shade, identify the most susceptible among them, and convince them that the dead belong below? Charismatic Reapers can harvest several ghosts at once, all without ever needing to don their masks.

Strength in Numbers

Threats to the Underworld can become too large for a single Reaper to handle. An unbound geist escapes in search of a body to hide in. A ghost has too many Sin-Eater allies to take alone. When situations like these arise, it’s time to round up a posse and put the problem down for good. Reapers acting in concert aren’t limited to dragging individual ghosts back to the Great Below: they can tear entire chunks out of the world, hurling them down into the Underworld along with all the ghosts (and anyone else, for that matter) in them.

With enough Reapers working together, city blocks, neighborhoods, or even entire districts can be pulled beneath the earth, never to be seen again. Houses and buildings vanish in the blink of an eye. That the living can be caught in this process isn’t a problem: those who don’t die in the initial collapse waste away in the Great Below. Other loose ends tie up on their own. The living rationalize the incident as a sinkhole or a freak accident. People with direct ties to the land quickly sicken and die. A large enough number of Reapers could destroy an entire civilization this way, Descending cities and letting the aftereffect do its work. Whether this has ever actually happened is hotly debated among Sin-Eater historians.

The Chthonic Gods

They don’t exist. You could map every tunnel, plumb every River, comb every book in every Dominion in the Lower Mysteries, and never find the way to Eljudnir or the palaces of the Lords of Xibalba. And what is the measure of a god’s existence if not an actual, physical presence you can go and visit?

They do exist. The dead venerate them, pray to them and sacrifice to them and commit atrocities in their names. Even the living sometimes find their way to the Church of the Gods Below. And what is the measure of a god’s existence if not the impact of its worshippers upon the world?

Next Time

We’ve met the disciples of the Chthonic Gods. Shall we delve deeper into the Underworld they claim to serve, or return to the sunlit lands and learn about the living who are a threat to the Underworld?

Matthew Dawkins here once again! In the first episode of the Onyx Pathcast we discussed the Contagion Chronicle. That discussion included coverage of the Cryptocracy: one of the “splats” in that upcoming book. The splats in Contagion are classified as the Sworn and the False, with the Cryptocrats as a proud member of the former.

Meghan Fitzgerald wrote all the player options for this game, due to my desiring consistency and connectivity across the Sworn, as well as knowing how Meghan excels at this kind of writing. We took a different approach to writing this book, with my assigning Meghan the task of writing the splats before any of the other writers were hired on. I wanted the Sworn detailed so every writer who came on later had a firm base from which to work for the remainder of the book. I think it’s worked out pretty well.

Today is not the day I unveil all the Contagion Chronicle’s secrets, but as we discussed part of the Cryptocracy in the podcast, here is the full splat in written form for your reading pleasure and speculation! Continue to listen to the podcast and check on this blog for previews and discussion of our upcoming games.

The Cryptocracy

Contagion as Social Entropy

There’s nothing insignificant about mere mortals. And that isn’t a compliment. It’s a warning.

They always look surprised to find someone like me schmoozing with the street performers and neighborhood graffiti crews, in my $600 suit and Chanel perfume. But who better to let sample my blood than those to whom society turns a blind eye? They’re the perfect carriers for the preventive cure — the key to immunizing the population against their own brutal instincts is a virus of our own. Pacification through hijacking the grassroots message, spread through our very own song of silence. Look, if the Cacophony works for us, surely it’ll work for a bunch of gullible kine.

What Is Contagion?

Look around you. World leaders hold each other hostage, poised to rain nuclear death down on all of us — human or not — in a fit of pique. People wear their hatred for each other on their sleeves, proud to be selfish warmongers as they close their borders, arm their citizens, and wave their dicks around. They watch the planet tear itself apart and pretend everything is fine. Sometimes we get self-absorbed, too, and we stop paying much attention to what the mortals are doing. That bites us in the ass, every time. The Contagion is what happens when humanity slides too far down the spiral into atrocity and unrest.

It’s only logical. Blood spills, society breaks down, the world gets sick. Then the effects make everything worse and throw us all into this maddening feedback loop that threatens to dismantle civilization altogether. Once humanity gets its collective shit back together, the outbreak subsides and we can all get back to our nightly bloodsucking, or obsessing over esoterica, or whatever it is we normally do — at least, until it all happens again.

What we stand to lose: Stability. Comfort. All the progress we’ve made since the first human being woke up in a cave in the middle of the night, terrified of the dark. Some say things were better for us then, when the shadows were deeper and harder to banish, but that’s just nostalgia talking. Make no mistake: Anarchy hurts us as much as it hurts them.

What we stand to gain: Control. A safety net. Moving beyond “good enough” so that maybe, someday, humanity doesn’t need handholding to keep a civilization going for more than a few years without killing each other en masse. I mean, we won’t pretend to be Mother Theresa, here. But at least we’ve got some perspective.

Where We Came From

The first time a Cryptocracy convened to rein in humanity’s worst impulses was during the outbreak that occurred in the flaming wreckage of Carthage, in 146 BC. The Contagion spread out from that final slaughter, all across the Roman Republic and the lands of its allies, and then even to those of its foes as they continued their conquest. A small faction within the vampiric Camarilla made tentative alliances with demons, sorcerers, and other shadow sects to curb the rampant human brutality and the illness’ symptoms. They kept a close eye on the Machine’s activity in the centuries that followed. Even after the vampires’ grand covenant collapsed, this faction monitored signs of the Contagion’s return and maneuvered behind the scenes to keep mortals from regressing too far into barbaric behavior.

We have persisted since then, growing to span the globe. Not every outbreak we’ve seen coincides neatly with a period of widespread chaos, but that’s to be expected — the factors that govern reality falling ill as a reflection of human folly are impossibly complex, and even we still don’t understand them all. Our numbers have swelled over the last century or so; between nuclear anxiety, global terrorism, biological warfare, and increasingly polarized populations, a lot of us worry about what comes next. What do you think will happen to the laws of physics and magic after World War III? Let’s not find out.

What We Do

The health of reality is in humanity’s hands, but let’s face it: They need our help. They can’t even tell what’s happening, much less tame their own instincts for solipsism and mob mentality. We nudge them in the right direction from the shadows, where we’ve always operated so well.

We wield the broadest influence possible without discovery. To that end, we accumulate worldly wealth and power, subtly controlling human institutions to steer them away from infected Infrastructure and unwise decisions. We protect the innocent from the Contagion’s ravages no matter what, autonomy be damned. What’s more important, the free will of a few human beings or the survival of civilization as we know it? No contest. We can’t be too obvious, though; we’ve seen how they react to us without the Contagion. Revealing ourselves would be counterproductive at best, so direct mind control and intervention are last resorts.

Some of us encourage cooperative behaviors and circumstances that foster harmony among humans, and others get rid of threats to stability by any means necessary. Between us, we quietly remove troublesome elements before they get out of hand. We have mystical avenues as well as mundane ones, always on the lookout for new ways to monitor and sway groups without their knowledge. We recruit experts in dreamwalking, astral travel, and hijacking healthy parts of the God-Machine for our own use. We study entropy, fate, causality, consequence, and patterns of ruination so we can halt or redirect those forces as we see fit. Humans generate them through their heinous acts, causing their own insidious cycles of societal breakdown. By manipulating these forces directly, we can interrupt those cycles long enough to take control.

Some accuse us of hypocrisy. We, a bunch of inhuman, flawed, struggling, violent shadow-dwellers, are supposed to know better than all of humanity? Pot calling the kettle black, much? Who are we to place ourselves in positions of power and judgment? But we know we’re no heroes. We’re not morally offended; we have no high horse to sit on. We just see and know so much more. We’re obviously not immune to greed and corruption either, but we’re a couple hundred supernatural beings in a city’s underbelly. There are billions of them. Frankly, it’s only natural for us to guide humanity in these matters.

How we organize: Our secret network of surveillance and communications connects us globally and keeps us in the know. We call it Caliber, a play on ECHELON, the massive intel program the Five Eyes nations use. Whether or not ours taps into theirs is nobody’s business but ours.

Despite Caliber, our hierarchies — called bureaus — are regional and local, for now. A given bureau might organize itself like a Freemason Lodge, an intelligence agency, or a corporation.

We value our diversity because each of us has fingers in different kinds of pies, and varied ways to interact with all the manifold levels of human society. We need that to make sure no stray terrorist or troublemaker escapes our notice.

Among the Sworn: The other Sworn look to us when humans get in their way, or they need information about the mundane world only we can learn. Sometimes we come into conflict with the Ship of Theseus, but nothing’s wrong with progress — we like progress! It’s only when they take it too far that we have to rein them in, too.

We get ourselves in trouble when: we get too heavy-handed, hide too many secrets from each other, or argue among ourselves about what’s best for everyone. We may not be morally offended on the whole, but we do have strong opinions — along with curses, magical limitations, and mystical behavioral urges — and they often conflict. If we let that compromise us, or we nudge humanity too blatantly, we tip our hand. We deal harshly with anyone who exposes us.

When the Contagion is in remission: We continue lurking behind the scenes, taking precautionary measures to keep humanity’s natural entropic urges in line. We explore new ways to spread our influence, plant the seeds of philosophies we want to encourage in the population’s subconscious and dreams, and insert ourselves into human institutions as fixtures they can’t easily dislodge in times of crisis.

Vector: Authority

Who We Are

  • The Invictus tycoon who donates large sums to handpicked politicians, and tanks companies with dangerous agendas through leverage and an army of ghouls
  • The Guardian of the Veil who maintains and monitors Caliber with magic, and knows how to disseminate the right information to the right people at the right times
  • The Ugallu who manipulates the media to remove troublemakers and rival conspiracies by exposing their transgressions to the world — with a few original tweaks, if necessary
  • The Winter Courtier who walks in dreams to convince the right people that doing what we want was all their idea in the first place, through oneiromancy
  • The Maa-Kep Internal Affairs officer who can always find evidence to convict those who don’t follow the rules…or those who make them, if they’re rules we don’t like

Yep, we’re at that strange part of the Trinity Continuum: Aeon Kickstarter, the part where things kind of plod along with a pledge here and there. (So I’ve included this new art above to kind of be the totem of shaking things up and making some action happen!) Amazingly, it took us until three-quarters of the way through to plateau for a bit. We’ve had KSs that plateaued three days after they started!

So now’s the time to tell all your friends if you’re a backer, and to take another look at the KS if you haven’t backed yet. Please, if you have time, post in social media so word gets out. In particular, if you know somebody that was a fan of Trinity back in the day, they may not be up on who is publishing what, or that this Kickstarter is even happening to bring back the game.

We always have folks coming to us after a KS wanting to know if they could still pledge because they missed hearing about it while it was running. If we can get word out to them now, they can get in on the fun and the extra goodies. Because while we now have BackerKit for post-Kickstarter activities, it’s not exactly really pledging during the KS.

Let me back up a tad.

When we first started doing Kickstarters, which I think was six years ago last week, there was just the bare bones of usability. It was the creators of the Kickstarters that added in “Add-ons” and “Stretch Goals” (and a bunch of other things), so when it came to knowing who had added on what, we all came up with improvised systems. Even Reward Tier rewards were, and continue to be, delivered one Reward Tier at a time by messaging that Tier. And then the next, etc.

Now, if you look at some of our Kickstarters, I put in anywhere between a dozen and two dozen Reward Tiers, because we were having fun and had a lot of wacky ideas we wanted to share with potential backers. It could take me a day to go through all those Reward Tiers, and then go through all the pledges individually to find out those who had added on the reward, and send out the links for just that one reward.

So, obviously, a bunch of folks saw opportunity in my misery, and what they call “Back-End Services for Kickstarter” became a thing. (Of course, I’m certainly not the only KS Creator who was grinding their teeth at the methodology, and a lot of folks had much more complicated reward set-ups).

BackerKit was one of these back-end services that I heard good things about, but I was hesitant to pay someone to do something I could do, albeit with a lot of complaining. While the late Stewart Wieck and I were talking about how he was doing his KSs in preparation for our shared Scarred Lands Kickstarter, he extolled the virtues of BackerKit and convinced me that the time and effort saved was well worth it.

And he was right. Not only does their set-up simplify any given disbursement of reward links or messages to setting up one file and letting BK get the links out to all who have that reward listed, but they have a “pre-order” page where folks who missed the KS can still “pledge” for items from the KS after it is over.

I put those two terms in parentheses because it’s not really a pledge that folks are making in that they don’t get all the stuff from the Reward Tiers, but they do get some, and it’s not a pre-order in the sense we are all used to in this hobby. But the terms are close enough and most importantly, they are a great way for folks to get involved in the KS after it has run, but without waiting for the books in stores, if they are even the type that get there.

As the folks who have contacted me about the Deluxe Wraith 20th Anniversary Edition and wanting to back-end pledge have learned, unfortunately. Wraith 20‘s Kickstarter came before I adopted BackerKit, so we don’t have a method for allowing post-KS pledges of any kind. That is totally my bad for not adopting BK earlier. We live and learn.

We do expect those Deluxes to show up available with our friends at Indie Press Revolution (see below in The Blurbs section) eventually, though, as have previous books from KSs before BackerKit.

To help you out, here are links to our existing BackerKit “pre-order” pages:

NOTE: You’ll need to go to the C20 one ASAP, as I’ll be closing it down soon as we prepare to ship the backer rewards.

That’s a fair number of ongoing BackerKit “pre-order” sites! We really do have:

KICKSTARTER:

Trinity-Continuum-300x101.png

The Trinity Continuum Kickstarter is three-quarters done and we’ve only just hit a real plateau, so now is the time to let folks know it is happening! There are a lot of fans of the original releases out there who aren’t connected to our current incarnation, so please, if you know a fan from back in the day: LET THEM KNOW THIS KS IS HAPPENING!

So far, we have pledges headed towards 300% of our funding goal, over 1500 backers, and we’ve gone through thirteen Stretch Goals including VARGs, new Noetic Biotech, new Cyberware and new Espionage-Related Hardtech, and Aberrants and their cults that will be added to the AEon AExpansion, a Trinity Continuum: Aeon novella entitled “Dawn“, a scenario called “Caper, Incorporated” has been added to the In Media Res scenario collection PDF for the Trinity Continuum Core, and backers will be able to download the Trinity Core Dice for the Onyx Dice Rolling App.

https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/200664283/trinity-continuum-aeon-rpg

Trinity Continuum: Aeon, is our reboot of the classic Trinity (Aeon) game, and Trinity Continuum: Core is the core book that all of our Trinity Continuum game lines will spin off from. Both books will be a part of this Kickstarter and backers have already received the first two quarters of the Trinity Continuum: Core text, with more to come. James Bell, our Kickstarter Manager, has been keeping this KS hopping, so we hope you’ll check it out!

Our next Kickstarter is slated to be EX3‘s Dragon-Blooded.

Vinsens-Tomb-Cover1-210x300.jpg

Coming this Wednesday as an Advance PDF on DTRPG, we reveal The Secret of Vinsen’s Tomb, a Jumpstart adventure for Pugmire. (And yes, there will be a physical book PoD version coming soon). www.drivethrurpg.com/product/232337/The-Secrets-of-Vinsens-Tomb–A-Pugmire-Jumpstart

Also releasing this Wednesday on DTRPG is the physical book PoD version of the Pugmire Core Rulebook itself!
